Stick Them With The Pinty End

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:07 pm

A huge problem I had with Oblivion was the fact that a lot of the swords looked dull. I ended up not using a lot of them because they looked like tourney swords or LARP weapons. We've seen a lot of Skyrim stuff but does anyone think this was fixed?

[Title typo fail! ] I know it's funny but please don't focus on that instead of the topic.

for some unspeakable reason swords in OB, dragon age, DA2, and from what i can tell so far skyrim as well all look like toys. there is absolutely no good reason for this; there are countless mods of much more intimidating and sharper weapons that work perfectly fine; it has to be an artistic choice, and its one i just cant wrap my head around. these ARE M-rated games, so its not like FOX is [censored]ing that the weapons look so "real" that our children will start attacking us with kitchen knives or something.

the daedric swords were the only remotely deadly looking blades, and thats more because they look like a piece of rusted scrap metal on a stick. having seen the cartoonishly large and impractical blade of the glass sword in skyrim, i can only conclude that theyve gone and done it again...its not that bad, but once all the mods start coming in and we see what actual deadly swords look like, the vanilla weapons will cause us to cringe in disgust yet again.

...meh, good thing my first character is an archer  .

I always thought the swords looked fine, I know what you mean though.

But once blood hits a sword its gotta be sharp.

And crushing swords can still draw blood I guess....

the wonderful thing about Skyrim is how they SOUND when you cut through something. It sounds like it is really slicing through.

I never thought they looked dull. And most swords in real life are NOT super pointy. Unless the sword is made for stabbing - like a dagger or a Roman sword, the tip is kind of superficial to the whole deal, since the main purpose is slashing and cutting with the edge of the blade. And a thin piece of metal doesn't have to be pointy, merely tapered, to easily get driven into someone's flesh with a little pressure. Take a ham or turkey (fresh out of the fridge if you like for maximum hardness) and see how easy it is to stab them deeply with something as dull as a butter knife.

Observe the end of a http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3123/2596362654_4af021b90e_o.jpg.

Again, it depends on the intended use of the sword, but any sword of sufficient length was not intending for "sticking people with the pointy end", but cutting them with the sharp sides.
