hiring help

Bit of a NOOb question, I am sure..

fairly new to morrowind. I just installed the bloodmoon and tribunal packs, and see that I can ask people to join me. I also hear can hire a pack animal.
Iam playing atabout level 30, and got offers of "travel togethre" straight away. My son is playing ata much lower level.. and does not seem to be attracting offers. He is in pelagiad atthe moment and has just seen of the assassin attcak at the first try (much less aggressive than the one I got.. mine had weapons which paralyzed me for 10 seconds, and they had killed me before I got a shot at them.. until I htought of teleporting to the top of a very sharpo rock pinnacle to sleep..they just fell off, and I killed them with single hits, one I was properly awake)

second part.. where can I hire a guar? and how? do I deal with the current owner or arethere people who trade in packanimals? I have morrowind comes alive installed and running.

any suggestions for a partner character in pelagiad/ebonheart(we are going to have to go and do the assassin quest)

Excluding mods, there is only one NPC in the game that you can hire and that is the mercenary outside the Royal Palace in Mournhold (Tribunal expansion) Calvus Horatius. He cannot be taken out of Mournhold.

You can buy pack rats also in Mournhold Grand Bazaar from Rerlas Mon. Again, only can be used in Mournhold.

There are no other companions in the game and no pack guars you can hire/use. You can get some NPCs following you in the game, and whilst they do they will fight for you - pilgrims you come across, slaves, etc. but generally they are weak and easily killed in a fight. You are not able to add items for them - better armour, weapons and so on - unless you are on pc and can use the console.

As you have it on pc I will move this to the mods forum for some suggestions.

Thanks.. I guess it must be the "morrowind comes alive" mod which isallowing my othe character to "travel together"

Some companion mods are wonderfully done. I especially recommend http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6855, http://lovkullen.net/Emma/Kateri.htm, and my all time favorite, http://lovkullen.net/Emma/Constance.htm. The last two have a great deal of personality and interactions to offer, while the first will actually attack your enemies, Oblivion-like, without waiting for you to hit first. In that vein, you may also want to check out http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7626. Again like Jasmine, they don't wait for you to be attacked. They see the enemy, they go for it.

Note that Jasmine and USC both require the http://sourceforge.net/projects/mwse/, or MWSE. You really should install that. It adds a ton of functionality to the game, that a lot of modders have made use of. Brilliant ideas and coding.

I vaguely recall a mod that lets companions level up to your character's level very quickly, but I don't recall whether it was for Oblivion or Morrowind. Hopefully somebody else has a brain that isn't slowly turning into bean curd, and can provide that. ;)

Jasmine only requires Tribunal and Bloodmoon, not MWSE. I thought about adding in a script that would cause her to attack your enemies without them attacking you, but never did it because that would require me to maintain two versions. Anyway, she's more than just a meatshield, she's a fully fleshed out companion.

If you are a member of House Telvanni, and playing the Uvirith's Legacy mod, there are a couple of companions available, both of whom will carry things and fight on your side. One is Gavyn, your apprentice; he can cast attack spells and conjure helpers. The other is Ash-Kosh, a Dremora Lord, an extremely tough fighter who resurrects when killed. There are one or two other companions available in this mod, but I haven't encountered them yet.

Uvirith's Legacy also makes available a Bag of Holding, which is far more useful than a companion when it comes to carrying capacity.

No offense, Jac. It looks like fable2 is confusing Jasmine with another Redguard companion, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=4695 (the names are very similar). She was mostly a proof-of-concept project to showcase Neo-Daigo's Companion Initiative concept. Hence her relative lack of personality and the use of MWSE.

@ KBRITT:
Are you aware of http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=815 and its alternatives, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=4650 and http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2779? The companions they feature do not have individual personalities and quests like Jasmine, Julan and Constance, but I like them better than the very basic companions from MCA.

Also, I believe there was once a thread dedicated to companion mods on the forum, but I can't seem to find it.

Guars can't be 'hired' in the original game, but you can hire them with the http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6112 mod.

I am not sure if you are recommending jasmine or janine? I installed jasmine, and a "pet shop" both atthe insistence of my son. He has been playing using these for a few days, and hs failed to keep his pets alive apart from a fairly tough and useful Durzog. The pets get in the way too much for me to thinkof them as anyhting more than an irritation (although funny at times).
jasmine seems interesting, but maybe I should try janine for my game? I also found that the"morrowinnd comes alive" includes a numberof npc who will travel and fight with you. They are now talking to my sons character, but not joining him (he has moved up to level 9) they all seem willing to work with my nord who is abovelevel 30. I also have bettre bodies and the VISUAL PACK which all seem excellent value (at free)

As I recall, MCA companions will only travel with you if you are their level or above. There are (or were in version 4.1) some that are lower level, (level 5-10) but it is random which ones you come across, of course.

I don't generally use companion mods, but I did enjoy Jasmine. My very favorite is http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5019, who does NOT require MWSE and has a quest of his (or her) own.

I have a personal opinion on CM_Partners. I use it and it's fantastic, the interface is great, but for some reason my companions all end up being very temporary; after a certain amount of time a window will come up saying "I can't take this any more, bla, bla, bla, give me your money, bla, bla, bla..." and when I refuse they attack me! this also happens with ones that aren't in my party. after being perfectly docile for a few visits to their location they suddenly attack me for no reason! I have connected this with drawing my weapon, which seems to give them a permanent disposition decrease. I don't know if that was on purpose, so you don't run around and collect a billion companions to destroy a town, but it seems a bit silly. It also may be my combination of mods, but I'm not sure. It's just so traumatic to slay my own companion :'(
EDIT: also I have been keeping a list filled with pictures of my fallen comrades and the ones listed under "treason" are getting more numerous.

Arjan's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=3236 is a companion mod I've used for years. You can hire mercenaries, guards of different factions, maids, bartenders, merchants, etc. And even dancers :)

You could put a small army together if you wanted to. And they're great for filling up houses.

This is a 'feature' of the mod. All companions will do it but the more 'evil' companions have a greater tendency to decide they're done with you ask for money and then leave. Give them the money and they won't attack. Don't and you'll have to kill them over it. This is all on the download page as I've never been interested in that mod and therefor haven't played it.

Return to III - Morrowind
