Can You Be A City Guard In Oblivion?

I was wondering if you can be a guard of any sort. Like patrol a city or something a guard would do. Is there a faction or something that allows this or no? Thanks!

Not in the vanilla game there isn't. Vanilla = no mods. If you've got a personal computer, there's probably several mods to choose from.

If you've only got PS3 or Xbox, it may be possible to roleplay this somehow. Don't quote me on this, but I think there are some beds in guard areas which can be slept in. You'll have to bring in your own food, though, if you try and eat their food, you'll get

STOP! YOU VIOLATED THE LAW!!!

yada yada yada

I imagine it would be pretty dull playing a guard. Eating, sleeping, standing guard for hours. Repeat. What are you plans to liven this activity up?

No.

You can join the Imperial Legion in Morrowind and it's been confirmed that you can in Skyrim as well, so fear not! Note though that you couldn't really arrest anyone in Morrowind.

Renee is correct, not in the vanilla game. There is a guard faction in the game but it is not joinable.

But if you want to do some serious roleplay there are quests that lend themselves pretty well to this. "Imperial Corruption," "Unfriendly Competition," if you're an Imperial City Guard; "Canvas the Castle," "A Shadow Over Hackdirt," if you're a Chorrol guard; "Corruption and Conscience," if you're a Cheydinhal guard, etc, etc. You could also roleplay a 'rogue Guard,' a kind of Dirty Harry who gets into trouble other guards wouldn't. Or you could roleplay a corrupt guard: activate NPCs around your city and roleplay that you're giving them a hard time. Pickpocket their gold and roleplay that you've taken a bribe. And so on.

Decrepit plays a character who patrols the roads of Cyrodiil. You might want to look at some of his past posts to get an idea how he plays his character. His approach allows for more adventures than a standard guard might have. If you did play a standard town guard you could always roleplay that you're allowed to leave the city to which you have been assigned once a week, on your day off. To make it more interesting you could even pick a town at random. Close your eyes and put your finger on a town name and send your character there, no matter what town it is. Maybe every month or two you could repeat the process, which could simulate being re-assigned to a different post.
