Is Skyrim the only true open world RPG this year?

Post » Sun Oct 02, 2011 7:59 am

After watching many gameplay videos of Dark Souls, I'm yet to be convinced that that game is open world, another game Rage looks more open than DS but how open, we don't yet know. Is this a trend where developers are beggining to call their games open world, when clearly they aren't. What do they consider to be the definition of open world? The first example I can think of is Fable 2, even though they didn't actually say open world, they certainly implied it.

The only game I can think of for next year that looks to be open world is Dragons Dogma.

Skyrim is the only "true" open world rpg this year but there are other rpg's this year too.

There's always Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning coming out in Feb 2012.

Looks pretty cool to me.

I'm not convinced that that game is truly open world either.

As at least one other person said, Saints Row 3 will be completely open world. Also, the new InFamous was released this year and that's open, though them may have limited off sections. I don't know since I didn't play it.

I remember people on this forum saying Witcher 2 was basically open world , even one of the devs in an interview called it open world, what a joke that turned out to be(not saying the game is bad, just that is not even close to open world). For a so called "fan friendly developer" they were very misleading regarding there game, like a lot of other devs when it comes to the label open world.

well I can't w8 to get the "finished" minecraft, and try some multiplayer (no idea what happens there)

other than that Skyrim is pretty much it :D

honestly even Blizzard are pushing D3 release to 2012 because you DON"T want to mess with Bethesda in NOV.

This year? Perhaps. Next year? Get ready for next year... Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Ni No Kuni, and possibly Final Fantasy Versus XIII...

The question should be "Does any other one matter"? The answer is no. Two Worlds 2 is average. Dead Island gets repetitive. Dark Souls 2 isn't massive sandbox like Skyrim. Skyrim is the only one that matters.

Quick question, sparked by nothing other than curiosity...

Let's say Dragon Quest X wasn't a Wii MMO and was coming out this year for the PS3 in a style clearly meant to be the sequel to DQ 8. How would it fare, in your opinion, against Skyrim on a personal level? :P

The expansion for Two Worlds 2 (Pirates of the Flying fortress) was released this year. It's already out on PC, not sure about consoles yet, though.

OMG how bad a situation are we in where we have to consider saint's row the 3rd an open-ended RPG? granted i'm sure i'll love the game, but its a cathartic sandbox more than anything...

skyrim, please save us from this hellish era of linearity and railroading! THE WORLD IS DEPENDING ON YOU!

KoA and Dragon Dogma both matter and there release only a few month after Skyrim.

The question was for 2011. Those are 2012 titles. KoA looks weak to me anyway.

As I've already mentioned Dragons Dogma could be the only one next year. From what I've seen I'm not convinced that KoA:R is truly an open world game.

It's by the same people who made Monster Hunter, So I'm guessing that it probably won't be. Most of their games, WHILE EXTREMELY FUN :D, are very restrictive on where the player can go.
EDIT: I'm talking about Dragon's Dogma here, I don't even know what KoA:R stands for lol :D

Did you not see my post? :stare:

I'm not sure why you think that about KoA:R... although I would assume its the compartmentalization of its "open" world, but Ni No Kuni will definitely have its own overworld map and will technically be open world... classic JRPG style (none of these new excuses for JRPG world design... but classic Final Fantasy style). Cue people saying they don't know what Ni No Kuni is... :P

Yes I did. I know the developers have said that it is but that's a trend I've started to notice. Trust me, if a game was truly going to be open world, they would show it off in trailers, as it would be a major selling point.

The only good one. Next year there should be a couple that are good including Reckoning which could knock the stuffings out of Skyrim if Beth isn't careful.
