Hand Crafted Dungeons

Post » Tue Oct 04, 2011 3:34 pm

A lot of people have got excited over Todd Howard saying that Skyrim has 150+ HAND CRAFTED dungeons but if you watch this E3 demo of Oblivion from 2005, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez1on9R_O9M&NR=1 , he says the same thing "hand crafted dungeons". How can we believe him this time? (Although I'm sure it probably is true this time!)

I wonder if its 150+ hand crafted dungeons and an additional 100 or so procedurally generated small dungeons to bring the total figure to the 250+ we've heard about more recently.

I'd be inclined to believe him more this time around, since he has at least 8 people crafting them this time, as opposed to the one he had before.

Since the dungeon design team is solely responsible for that aspect of the game, I'd bet they'll be designing right up until shortly before it goes gold. It would make sense for them to focus on the most critical and complicated ones first, and then do the little filler ones last, since they're the least likely to introduce bugs.

Already Discussed multiple times...

In Oblivion Bethesda made a lot of promises that they couldn't keep because it was their first Xbox 360 game. Now, 2 Games later, I think that they can keep their promises.

And all in Oblivion were hand-crafted, they just shared a lot (A very high amount) of textures, design, style and premade parts.

I think what they mean is each dungeon is modeled by hand this time, in Oblivion it was just put together with premade blocks which is why so many dungeons looked the same, just different layouts.

Scary find? pffft if you look you'd see, most don't care, theres a loads worth of statements made by Todd, pete and other devs for Oblivion at the time that did not translate into what was, alot of it was just hyping. now they don't do it was much and are conservative, imo damn well better be and let the game speak for itself because everythime they do I stir inside. 2 steps forward 3 steps back.

If all of the handcrafted dungeons are anything like the barrow in the gameplay video --- Skyrim will exceed my epicness meter. The dungeon in the video was extremely impressive.

How do we know they are more conservative before the game comes out?

I'm not hating just questioning. I know they have a HUGE crew working on dungeons now and I also agree that first dungeon looked fantastic

It was impressive, hopefully they will all be as impressive and not like oblivion's. I didn't even bother to go into oblivion's dungeons mainly because there was no good loot.
