Will you choose a partner purely for pragmatic purposes, or is it important for your roleplaying experience that your union "makes sense" in light of your character's persona?
Bethesda probably deliberated a lot about this feature, but I suppose they figure that the gamer community is mostly made up of younger, more liberal folks.
Still, the romance dialogue only has to appear if you use the appropriate ring to show interest in whichever NPC you want to woo, and that's a nice solution to those who would be opposed to, for example, homosixual romance.
Personally, I'm just going to get hitched with a big ol' orc. They're tough, they're hardy, they can carry all my heavy stuff and if we get attacked by a dragon, I can probably outrun them
