Marriage: Choosing a Spouse

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 2:30 am

I am very curious about people's thoughts and feelings on these matters concerning in-game marriage.

Will you choose a partner purely for pragmatic purposes, or is it important for your roleplaying experience that your union "makes sense" in light of your character's persona?

Bethesda probably deliberated a lot about this feature, but I suppose they figure that the gamer community is mostly made up of younger, more liberal folks.

Still, the romance dialogue only has to appear if you use the appropriate ring to show interest in whichever NPC you want to woo, and that's a nice solution to those who would be opposed to, for example, homosixual romance.

Personally, I'm just going to get hitched with a big ol' orc. They're tough, they're hardy, they can carry all my heavy stuff and if we get attacked by a dragon, I can probably outrun them :)

If he dies, well, I might be a little Khajiit-curious... ;P

Well there should be two options, hetero and doesn't matter what race for me. I could curl up next to the fire with a big cat. I don't do orcs or lizards though.

Well due to my personality and what race I like so far, I may just go for same race or a like marriage. Yet, if I really like someones personality and say that I'm playing a bosmer and they are a argonian then I'm happy being with a argonian.^_^

I believe that a true roleplayer will pick one of the "...because it is something my character would do given his/her personality, race, background, beliefs etc" options.

Since I RP, I go by how my character is. For all of you that have seen Willow, you know for a fact that General Kael is not in the finding-a-wife business. I focus more on quests, killing and power.

But, if a certain woman catches my eye or becomes a great companion, then I guess I wouldn't be opposed.

And I'm completely against homosixual marriage, even in video games.

For me, my character will marry whoever I feel will amuse me more at the time. If they die then I'll just pick someone else that amuses me.

I'm not sure about this one. I don't really think I need a wife/husband to uses as a meat shield... So I think I would pick who looks good to me... If this was Oblivion I might try to hook up with that wood elf from the theives guild quests and hope she steal stuff and brings it back to the house.

If you're going Thieves Guild then Dynari Amnis for sure. She was attractive.

I'm neither for nor against homosixual marriage in the abstract, but my character will only form romantic relationships with or marry female characters regardless of my character's gender. In other words, the number of males involved can never exceed 1, and the only eligible male is my own character.

Wow, the votes seem pretty much across the board.

When I role-play a game I do like to stick to the Lore of it. Romance in Dragon Age Origins had interracial and same-six romances, but the same-six was only with character that would probibally allow it lore wise. DA2 changed this by just letting anyone have anybody.

Skyrim seems to have removed all the restrictions, whether this is due to the complexity of having each NPC have a preference or what I don't know. Probibally just easier and makes more people happy.

Personally I just don't see a lot of same-six or interracial unions in TES Lore. There is some of course, there is even unions with corpses, but generally speaking those are outside what would be considered the norm. I'm going to play many characters but I assume most will pursue the opposit six and the same race, just because it makes sense to me in the game lore wise. But I'm sure one or more characters will try something different, especially if I see that Argonian maid lift her tail one more time ...

I'll just choose whoever has the best house if we have the option to move into their place.

You've made this poll waaaay to complicated. You could have just left it with any option of:

Hetero marriage
Gay marriage
Bi marriage
Interracial marriage (hetero/bi/gay)

I'm open to homosixuality on some of my characters but most of them are probably going to be hetrosixual. Some might be interracial, but it all depends on which character im playing.

Dont think ill marry an orc unless I am playing as one too tho. Probably not an argonian either unless i am one. Altho playing as an orc i could marry a human or mer woman. And as an argonian I could possibly marry a female Kahjit, hmm maybe a lisbian couple...

On a side note, i wonder if i'll ever bother playing all characters im making up in my head. Either way its fun to make them up. Ohh and lastly when I play a homosixual it will be in secrecy as its not accepted by the society in skyrim.

I certainly hope not. If I wanted a liberal sociology lecture, I'd turn on the TV and watch some of the crap that passes for Prime Time these days.

Yeah I didn't want to make people feel overloaded but selfishly, I am personally very interested not just in peoples' decisions on this, but in their motives as well :)

Well there are a few votes against homosixual and even interracial marriage due to "personal beliefs/convictions" already, I'm curious about what the results will show by tomorrow
