Words of Power: Dragon Language

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 9:06 am

I am just a little confused on the dragon language. I recently and begrudgingly accepted that dragons have to speak/shout to use their power. We learn their language and can use their powers against them or any NPC. But my confusion comes with the unconventional dragon powers that we can learn. Force Push, lightning storm, dash speed, and a list of unkown others. If we learn these from dragons, then I would expect dragons can use them against us. But it is this assumption that is not really making that much sense that a dragon will be force pushing us to the ground or calling a lightning storm.

So I am just wondering if anyone can clear up this confusion. If they can do these wierd things, how will it be explained, is it too far fetched from what you think about dragons, or have you considered this. And if they can't or will not use these wierd powers in the game, why can't they use their own language for this effect?

It seems like either way its a conundrum. What way do you expect and how do you come to terms with it...

(BTW I preordered)

ive heard remores that dragons won't be able to use more than one shout per dragon species. I personally hope this isn't true because it sounds like their trying to make the dragons weaker and id prefer if the game was as challenging as possible.

So this will tell me they are not smart enough to learn their vocabulary for more than one power. Which also leads me to believe that dragons may not use lightning storm because they can't learn those particular phonetics?

My understanding (and I believe this was covered in a podcast at one point) is that dragons can use some of the same shouts as players, but not all of them. I take that as meaning a dragon could know one or more shouts and use them against us, but there will be some shouts we can learn that are totally unusable by dragons (Slow Time being one that makes sense to remove, right off the top of my head).

Well the PC unlocks the powers of dragon shouts by absorbing the souls of dragons. Perhaps the same rules apply to the dragons but because they're all serving Alduin (in some sense) they don't just go around killing each other. Perhaps later in the MQ you will find dragons that aren't just some different elemental type but are older and more powerful because they can use more than one shout.

This may be refreshing if it is true that dragons can not use "unconventional" attacks against us, only because it stretches believability. But in fairness to them, why cant they and where did this part of their language come from then? I guess I am hoping for it to make sense either way.
