Bad Storms...

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 1:28 pm

Sorry if this topic has come up before (been off the forums for quite a while), but I think experiencing some awful storms in Skyrim would add one more level of difficulty and a uniqueness quality to the game. Where else do you find bad storms in a game that effect your game play?

Say a nasty blizzard hits, and you're on your way from a small shack in the woods to a large city closer to the mountains. As it gets colder and the snow starts to pile up, you could get some sort of a fitting HUD 'indicator' (like ice around the screen, though now I forget which game features that) letting you know that you need to take shelter and let the storm pass, or at least get out of it for a time.

Or how about some nasty thunderstorms? Say there's a 1/25 chance during each storm (per storm) that you could be hit by lightning, and the lightning would reduce your health by 'x' points. If you're low on health, maybe it'd be best to take shelter and rest. I think that weather should play a LITTLE bit larger roll in a game, especially one that relies on travel, particularly long distances, and often on foot.

What do you guys think? :)

I doubt there will be weather in the game, other than the occasional rain shower with thunder in the distance. However maybe not to the degree you are suggestion, but I like the idea of of storms and stuff.

Forum member Vincent McCool played at Eurogamer Expo and confirmed heavy blizzards. He said it was so thick that he could barely see anything when he was at Dawnstar in the far north.

Being hit by lightning would be really funny. The first time.

I'm just gonna say that would be amazing, and it is a very good idea. Could you imagine seeing a tornado in the distance, and everyone running for there lives screaming? That would be crazy and then go back and see the devastation left from the tornado? Omg, talk about an amazing game.

From what I've heard so far, blizzards sound amazing. I can't say for certain since I haven't played the game yet personally, but it's one of the things I'm looking forward to most. Adds a lot of atmosphere to the game, and makes towns and inns that much more important.

I'd like to see havok effects on the player character, an oncoming wind that slows the players progress for example.

1/25 is actually really good chances of getting hit.

I love your idea. I hope there is strong wind that whips those trees around and blows leaves in the fall forest.

I believe the game you were thinking of that included this mechanic was in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 where you see the ice build up around the screen indicating that you needed to go near a source of fire to warm up. For a game like Skyrim however, I think implementing this mechanic would kind of take away from the freedom that you would have exploring, meaning that you would have to stop whatever you were doing to try and seek shelter which would probably annoy some people. I know where you are coming from with the realistic aspect to it but I don't think it is something that would belong in Skyrim and future TES titles. Maybe perhaps after spending a lot of time out in the cold, you pick up an active effect which would fall in along the lines of a cold or flu like symptom where you would need to take a potion/medicine to recover.

I really like the idea of extreme Blizzards, but I heard that's already done. I also love the thought of extreme Thunderstorms, but let's keep the "Struck by lightning" idea to be extremely rare, since often getting struck can be really annoying.
