Do video game characters think?

Well we ARE run by electricity....and we CAN all be understood through psychology

Not in the physical sense. And psychology is a field of vague readings of the human mind. Biological.

You meant "if you are one of those people who believe that animals cant think don't bother replying" ?

I had a dog once who was getting bullied by the older dogs at my grandmas house. They wouldn't let her drink out of the water bowl. Every time they caught her drinking from it they chased her away.

So when the other dogs were away she picked up an old margarine container and scooped it into the water dish then ran a short distance away with it and drank from that. I saw this happen myself and was shocked that a dog would use a piece of trash as a tool like that.

You are right i did mean that....and yes, people dont give beings other than ourselves enough credit. ....actually they dont even give other people enough credit. Then you hear stories about the npc in oblivion going around to all the shops and buying up all the armor and it makes u wonder...

exactly. DNA is our coding. :hubbahubba:

Like they all have objectives and they all want to do those objectives...So when you are about to kill them, do you think they get scared because they wont be able to complete those objectives? Sometimes ai seems to take on a life of its own and get smarter. Do you think skyrim's characters will be smart enough to actually think about their lives? If you are one of those people who don't believe that animals cant think don't bother replying. If you think about it, it is impossible for us to exist. What if the video game characters are like us? :bonk:

self awareness hasn't been achieved with AI.

AI isn't even aware that it is AI yet, even if they could evolve. it'd take much more advanced tech

Also, hardware limits them from thinking, as their processing speed and storage is not even enough to be self-aware

annndd, we are coded with chemicals. not numbers. They are both coding, but completely unalike at the same time.

you're just closed minded. We don't understand anything about the universe. It takes wisdom to know that...but then there's people like you who think they know everything.

But we do know that our computers are not advanced enough to create a "true" AI like that of which you speak. At least, not yet, and certainly not a computer that you'll find in homes anytime soon.

Fun Fact: The human brain has been calculated to consume about 2.5 petabytes of data. That would be 2,621,440 gigabytes.

Now, multiply that by the number of intelligent(i.e. sentinent) NPCs in the game.

By the time that would be feasible for a home computer to run, we won't even be dust in our coffins anymore.

It's amazing how much we *don't* know.

When I watch an NPC...I wonder what's going on. I know it's code, but it can seem so real and I think it just actually shows how creative and talented the developers are. When a character's head-tracking is working, the "person" will watch when something runs by. The children or a dog runs by and the NPC turns to watch. I know it doesn't actually have eyes but it's amazing, you know? They blink, their chests move as if they were breathing...but it's an animation. Skynet *could* happen though, right? :)

Given the amount of memory on the 360 characters might not even be able to do basic math

Adding to my previous post:

Ironically, our DNA only consumes 750 MB of data. You could carry around the information required to clone all of your friends and family in your pocket, if need be.

Now youre grasping at straws.
Think about chemisty kids ;D
Carbon is what WERE made out of.
Silicon is the only thing code would apply to, which has similar properties to carbon.
So there may be robotic life out there somewhere, like a [censored] transformer.
BUT NOT HERE.
AI is code that takes a long time to write xD
There is no evolving in a code, the code would break.
Sad code is SAD.

Also, true about the amount of mem in a brain, holy [censored] that would require alot.
plus WE only access about 10% so even we arent smart enough to use our brains yet, wierd huh?

haha

And this, as well.

AI today is simply a list of outputs for a given input or inputs. One of the outputs is randomly selected, and there's your AI.

There may be slight differences between infinitely complex genetic sequences and a few thousand lines of code created by humans.

How high are you? And who doesn't think animals think? They have brains and neurons that undergo synapse. AI in video games have no free will, or the pure spacial capacity for even the smallest bits of rational, independent thought.

False myth is false. It's been proven that we use much more than 10% on a regular basis(hell, we use more than that when we are sleeping)

Until computers get the ability to write their own code to advance themselves (aka, their original code is upgrade without human intervention or pre-manipulation)......then AI doesnt really exsist.
