More viable support skill for melee build?

Post » Fri Oct 07, 2011 4:52 pm

I'm planning on doing a melee build for my first character, and I was contemplating putting a few perks into one support skill along with my combat specific ones. my skills are as follows, as well as a brief thought on the six support skills I'm debating over. any imput is greatly appreciated, save for all you trololololoos lol.

my skills -
1. Heavy armor
2. Two handed
3. Block*
4. Smithing

* will only invest perks if there are bonuses for two handed users and not only shields.

Support Skills-

1. Alchemy.
Pros- poisons add to damage, potions can heal and restore fatigue, easy money.

Cons- rather time consuming to find ingredients, cooking can heal, ingredients must be collecTed or bought.

2. Archery.
Pros- good way to start a fight, keeps me out of harms way. dragons fly...

Cons- takes away experience from melee skills, doesn't really help during a fight.

3. Enchanting.
Pros- adds potential offense and defense, can be useful throughout almost any scenerio.

Cons- needs souls, money, gems to recharge, plus research.

4. Lockpicking.
Pros- access to loots and areas

Cons- no combat advantages.

5. Pickpocketing.
Pros- access to possible quest solutions, money and loot.

Cons- no combat advantage, dependent upon sneak skill to be effective.

6. Restoration.
Pros- probably the best option to heal, adds some other useful support spells.

Cons- uses magicka, which i won't increase, requires a hand to use, which isn't practical with two handed as a weapon skill.

Like I mentioned in Non-magic Warrior thread, there is now more emphasis on restorative propreties from food and potions, so you do not need to go Restoration heavy anymore. Granted, it will still be very useful for Spellsword classes and such (Myself, I will personally use it for my first Crusader class), but I still picked archery as it complements my anti-dragon tactics perfectly. I decided to go for both. And I think this time pure warriors will be effective in difficult parts of the game without their basic healing spell or such.

I think those are great points, and archery for anti-dragon combat is smart. I'm just worried that while in the heat of battle I might not have a way to heal myself quickly if I get in danger. cooking and health regen can only do so much against a dragon, but I guess I could buy potions. still, it takes away from my melee specific skills during combat, which is a bummer.
