Does the PC version of Skyrim require Steam?

I really want to get a physical copy of Skyrim to get the map but I also want to have it registered to my Steam account, so if I buy Skyrim in a store will I be able to activate and download it on steam or does it have some kind of DRM not associated with Steam?
