This is why Gamestops were created, or any store that sells video games.

I would never pre-order from Amazon or anywhere else I couldn't go directly to and pick up the game.

Whenever i've picked release-date delivery from amazon they awlays get it to me ontime, might have to rethink my pre-order from amazon if demand is high enough that it's pushing back shipping.

Agreed. Unless of course I use Steam. But I never order the physical box from the internet. Either store or Steam.

Why wouldn't Amazon get it until the 14th?

I'm looking forward to Skyrim, but not enough to pay extra for release date delivery :P. It's also part of my un-hyping process: I got too over-hyped with OB and was disappointed (until OOO came about, anyway). Therefore, I won't let myself get too excited about Skyrim before playing it. So, I'll happily wait an extra week or so, if need be. Plus, it gives me more time to finish up my uber OB play through I'm currently doing (I really love OOO).
