Lets Not Count Out the MQ

Post » Sun Oct 09, 2011 5:22 am

The problem with doing the main quest is it make you ungodly powerful way too quickly. Maybe they fixed that, maybe they didn't. I usually need to mod in a slower levelling system anyway. The games of the past had become dramatically less fun, the more powerful you became. I want to keep it challenging as long as possible.

edit: only part of the OB main quest I felt pressured on was the one with the actual timer. But, then, I've been playing RPGs of various types for thirty years - I'm really used to taking all the time you need to do random sidequests, even while there's a giant meteor hanging in the sky about to annihilate all life.

What part of OB has a timer? I seriously don't remember anything like that.

I'm in no rush to do the MQ especially since I intend to hack up the shouts and put them in a Sword :P I don't want to RUN into the MQ, I rather "slip" into it as a consequence of me doing something else than actively searching it.

I'm not. But in these games the hidden gems are the one you personally find and aren't directed to. Usually I actually to head first into the MQ then about 1/3 or halfway break off to explore/travel on my free will more. It's pretty much dictated by the character I'm playing.

Skyrim the character I have planned isn't as fleshed out as others I've made so I can adapt to choice related surprises and be less bound to a strict guideline for a character. So I'll probably pay less attention to the MQ at the start and rather later on get involved.

I like to get to know the land a little bit before doing the MQ. In Morrowind, for example, I didn't really start the MQ for several levels into the game and it felt right not to. In Oblivion, I always felt rushed into the MQ (which really fit the story because of the impending daedric invasion) and didn't get to "bond" as much with the game world.

You can't avoid leveling the way you could in Oblivion.

A vast majority of members on this forum, myself included, have repeatedly stated that they will ignore/not do the MQ for a looong time in their game. However, I have been thinking about this lately and I am going to go out on a limb and say that BGS might really make something special with the MQ here. Who knows? I may even get svcked in and play through a large chunk of it before I realized I haven't explored yet!
I just wanted to say that I have faith in BGS and just maybe the MQ will be the best quest line of them all.

you have my word that this MQ will be epic and yes i know this because this is the game bethesda has been wantint to make for twenty years... there has been four games and for a prophecy for alduin to come back four things had to take place.. each game had one take place.. this has been in preparation for a long time and it is finally here.. this game is the prophecy they have been building up for and it will be EPIC.. to be honest now that i think about it i am scared there is a possibility this might be the last one because they have been following the prophecy from the beginning.. after this game there is no prophecy

I won't be doing the MQ quickly, but only because I don't plan on a couple of my characters being "dragonborn". I'll let the tut part say I am or w/e, but then after that it's just being a ranger, or villainous nord. :)

Why wouldnt you do the MQ? I jumped right into it in Oblivion, bu then slowed down a bit to complete the guild quests. I will probably do the same in Skyrim, do a few quests from the MQ, then go about exploring and doing side quests and faction quests.

A lot of people don't just have 1 character. Or they have characters that aren't heroes of the entire province/world. For example, I'll have a nord barbarian that just loots and pillages. Maybe does some questionable quests. He won't even touch the main quest. Then I'll have a dunmer ranger that lives off the land and helps people when he can. Once again, won't touch the MQ with that character. Who knows when I get around to making character that would fit the role of dragonborn.

It depends on how the MQ is paced. Morrowind's Main Quest was paced at such, that you could seamlessly incorporate it into your grand adventures, as such, I found myself doing some odd jobs, exploring, etc, then going back to visit that old Sugar Tooth Caius.

Oblivion's Main Quest on the other hand, even before you leave the tutorial, the pace is " you need to get on this sh*t NOW!!!!!!!!!). Your only true respite comes when you're on the "Blood of the Daedra" quest, but still...

Fallout 3's was paced like Oblivion, but had a different tone. It opened up the possibility of exploration without dire ramifications. It very much struck a fairly effective balance between motivation and freedom. It can probably best be summed up as: "Aw crap, I need to find Da.... oooh what's that on the Horizon????"

I prefer to do the MQ, then take breaks on sidequests along the way. LONG breaks, with tens of sidequests during each break. Because when you go on ONE quest, you're bound to find around two to four other quests on the way. (At least, in Oblivion.)

I usually do the main quest on my first character and I simply can't wait to do this one, it really seems epic and I can't wait to see some dragon action in this game, they look way too cool to pass up on for long.
That said I'm not rushing through the game, I'll be doing all the other quests and stuff I find too.

I'll likely start off doing a few MQ quests then I'll be off on my merry way solving the needs of the common man and exploring. :tops:

They're doing a great job with everything so far and I'm sure they've hired good writers for the main quest. It's already clear they have an interesting, original storyline.

I'm going to play the MQ just like I do all TES games..I always follow it through but I let any little distraction such as dungeons, side quests or just curious exploration pull me away from it when possible.

Hope to the writing gods. If Emil's parts are seen as the best again and he's the lead writer for another Fallout after 3 I'll shriek.

I'll be avoiding the MQ for a long time, but not 'cause I'm thinking it'll be lacking or anything. I'd rather just meander until level 25 or so to get a feel for things, is all...
