TES (The Elder Scrolls) games are amazing and deep.

Hopefully you get to enjoy some of the others like Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion before or after Skyrim as well. Others have given lots of good advice. There's a lot of bickering on this forum but lots of good passionate fans.

All I can say is, you came at the right time. Skyrim appears it will be the best Elder Scrolls game yet.

I can't say I was this excited about Oblivion.

I can't say I was AROUND when Oblivion was released. I had about six months to a year before I knew it was out. I was REALLY busy at the time.
