HUD still looks awkward

Post » Sun Oct 09, 2011 11:20 pm

The inventory is great. I love that we can rotate items now and get a good look at them.

As for the rest of the UI - Not so happy. The Compass is intrusive as hell at the top of the screen and those arcadey text messages are just awful. The 3D map looks almost too good at what it does and doesn't really fit the setting. A simple parchment style map would've been better.

Mind explaining why?

Oh, oh! I got this:
"Authenticity"

We men of viking manner, adventurers of sorts, need not an iPod or GPS device! A flat map is well smirked upon, for triangles either represent trees...or mountains.
And a monster, usually means "Do not go here!"

Any questions?

It's unrealistic.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm sorry, it was just amongst all the dragons, magic, undead, atronachs, Daedra, Gods (I had to go there :P), that I thought some level or fantastical realism was acceptable. I mean, sure - I get the idea that your character doesn't have a magical bird's eye view map; but it's not meant to be a map for your character - it's for you. And it's the most realistic a map CAN be. It's literally the terrain; it throws the whole 'the map isn't the terrain' saying out the window!

Your comment is useless and makes no sense. I want Skyrim's interface to be similar to Morrowind, got a problem with that? Step outside and we can solve it.

I knew you would resort to the old pathetic "HURR BUT THERE'S DRAGONS IT'S FANTASY" argument. Like you said, your character does NOT have a magical bird's eye view of the province, making the 3D map non-sensical.

Map is 3D outside, 2D inside. Outside, imo, you get that grand feeling of awe, and if you think it is unrealistic you could count it as an awareness of the land, since it only really shows the general formation/settlements.

3D model imaging gives rise to cool little puzzles, as shown in the demo. I do not see why you would hate against that honestly. I am somewhat annoyed at the lack of player model though... I did like seeing how stuff changed how I looked without going in/out of the menu.

Personally, I felt Morrowinds UI was somewhat cluttered and clunky. It was cool how you could move it around and re-scale it, but you could never have all the information on screen at one time, so I felt I had to keep on altering it to see stats and stuff, which was a little annoying. It also had a "numeric table" feel.... And so I am glad it is moving away from that.

Oblivions' also had a few flaws, which the favorite system seems to be aimed at fixing. I hated having to scroll past all those random keys and scrolls looking for the right thing :P

Also... we have not had a detailed show around the UI yet. We have had glimpses, and a basic overview, but nothing more. So speculating is going to be a stretch.

Oh no, you're threatening him with violence and beat up over the internet. How dreadfully frightening.

On a more serious note: Don't bite the troll bait, just ignore such comments rather than threatening with violence over the internet, you just appear as the lesser person that way.

I do see your points, but I disagree. It looks cool and I don't think it's as ugly as others do.

No it wasn't. Oblivions was easy (apart from the size 789538 font).

Going through 3 animated tabs with more tabs within where in Morrowind everything is within reach in one click and you call Oblivion easy? Oblivion had list view and sorting which is handy but I still don't like animated tabs within tabs. I like Skyrim's UI though, it is like virtual desktops. I would like to change size and position of the hud elements though. Vertical bars on sides of the screen and no compass or enemy health indicator would serve me better. And much smaller skill notifiers, somewhere around corners.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! What a tough guy! Problem is, judging from your antagonistic, self-satisfying posts, you're probably a 12 year old with no social skills, hence pretty easily beaten up :)

Takes up the entire screen, cannot easily navigate through it and the 3d parts are so worthless/useless/svckS!
3d map? please.
rotating objects? WHY

Of course it takes up the entire screen, Menus tend to do that, makes them easier to navigate. Also, obviously the "being able to rotate objects is worthless" part is a lot of crap considering some items are clues that you must examine in order to complete quests.

As for the 3D map part, I personally like it more than Morrowind and Oblivions uninteresting and generic fantasy maps.

But your character can move around the weapons - but you don't like that either? That's rather realistic. As to the map - again, it's not your character viewing it - it's you. Unless you're one seriously hard RP'er, it won't even require a mod. Just out of curiosity - does not having to eat/drink/sleep really tick you off too? I mean that's non-nonsensical on the same scale of the map.

Can't tell if trolling or serious.

It does, actually. I hope they implement FNV's hardcoe mode into Skyrim.

Well - it'll probably have to be a mod, just like the map you want.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your opinion, even if it was an unpopular one.

HUD is more than fine in my opinion.

However I'm not a fan of the 3D map at all, so I'll likely ban myself from using it and use the pre-order map instead. Or a copy of it so I can write notes on it.
I'm also not a fan of the current UI, they have to make it smaller. When your skills level up your entire screen is filled with messages. :(

You don't like it, cool, the majority of the people love it, you haven't even played it yet and your judging it.
Bethesda aren't going to run up to your house and say they are going to change it for one person.
