User Interface still keyboard based?

Post » Mon Oct 10, 2011 4:05 am

From what I've seen it looks like the UI (actions, movement, etc) is still all keyboard based. I'm used to playing MMORPG's (WOW, RIFT, etc) and would much prefer a UI that interacts more like those do -- I'd hoped that Oblivion would be the last chapter done using the 'old RPG' type commands.

Am I just not looking at the right demo's, or is Skyrim really going to play like 1990's rpg's?

Can you be more clear about what you're talking about?

That would change how the entire game works, you can't use the mouse for movement because the mouse is already used for camera and attacking/casting spells.

What are you talking about? WoW uses more key commands than any game I know. And if you use the mouse for everything, please stay out of important Raids

Oblivion was based on a PC keymap because it was designed using a PC interface. Skyrim, however, was designed using an Xbox interface [even though they're very similar].

People complain that they need to use the mouse to click in menus and that the UI is designed for the Xbox.

I prefer more keyboard oriented UI's but to each their own.

It makes clear that each person has different tastes. I myself find your wish sooooooo horrible.

No, I don't use mouse clicks for EVERYTHING ... but I don't want to have to open menus to for everything either. I like being able to mouseover things (i.e. mobs) and see what they are, I like being able to tab target OR mouse click to target, I like being able to use my multi-button mouse for something other than attacking, and I like having my hotkeys in visible bars at the bottom and side of my screen.

btw - I do raid, and frankly as long as you have decent dps and aren't stupid enough to stand in fire, no one cares if you're using your keyboard or your mouse (as it happens, I use both).

The reason this question has arisen, is because I've just reinstalled Oblivion on my new i7 pc (it wouldn't play on the one I had when it released, and I never got around to it on the vista pc -- too busy playing wow). I really enjoyed Morrowind, but apparently was blocking the awkward command interface. I was looking forward to Skyrim, but if it's as awkward to play as Oblivion, I'm not going to bother with it.

The OP is clearly saying that they would like a UI made with the PC in mind, which is designed to be navigated by mouse, rather than the console UI where you have to scroll through everything, that Oblivion and Fallout 3 had, which svcked hardcoe on the PC. What we know as of yet is that Bethesda is not making a UI for the PC, and that they will have to suffer with the awful console UI ported over, just like with Oblivion and Fallout 3.
