Evil lurks...

Post » Tue Oct 11, 2011 3:37 pm

Each and every time i played Oblivion or any other RPG I ALWAYS ended up doing evil stuff. I could start out playing the gallant knight in shining plate armour, protector of the week, but somewhere along the road I would always end up doing evil [censored]. Some city guard would look at me the wrong way or be rude or racist against me until i would light his ass on fire. Some old beggar would sound too weak or beg too much only to get my greatsword shoved up his ass. If some drunk at an inn would say something "drunkish" to me while walking past him I would bash his face in with a hammer. Eventually I just learned to live with being a neutral character who would pillage, [censored] and kill people who didn't please him and help the ones who did.
... Just wondering if anyone has got the same "problem" and what they think is the reason behind these evil deeds is. :D -And also if you could list the evil deeds you use to do in RPG games.

I tend to do really nice things actually.

Things that are a lot nicer than what I would probably really do in that situation.

I always try to make a specifically bad character, but I can never really get into it.

We all have a dark side, and in a video game, there are no inhibitions.

I sometimes wind up doing evil things in RPGs too, especially on later playthroughs, but usually, I just want to escape from the real world (where there's way too much evil) for awhile and be a neutral to good guy.

Because it's fun, lots and lots of fun ;)
I like Chaotic Neutral; random acts of kindness intermingled with random acts of evil with a whole load of meh go kill your own damn rats thrown in

It's simple really- very few games give you the option to be evil. Most games you play heroes and you are on a path that is linear and pre-planned from the get go. A Bethesda video game like the Elder Scrolls or Fallout series is so special because they let you be who you want to be. Hell, don't beat yourself up so much about it. My argument to my girlfriend who walks into the living room and sees me killing chickens while playing Red Dead Redemption usually goes like this, 'Honey, I spend every waking minute of my life playing the good guy. Let me kill some damn virtual poultry.'
It's good to get some aggression out, whether you do so in the gym or in Skyrim. So kill baby, kill. :)

For some strange reason I find it extremely hard to do anything evil in a video game short of theft.

As many a philosopher has noted, there is both light and dark within each of us. Most of the time in civilized society, we're constrained from letting those dark parts out. Laws and (hopefully) morality keep us in check when we're tempted to do anything truly heinous, but in games we have the luxury of indulgence. In fact, I think one of the greatest things about games is that they allow us to do things we can't do in reality, whether it's because they're simply impossible or because our better judgement prevents us from doing them.

I think it's very natural to explore the darker parts of our psyche when playing games, and in many ways it can serve as an outlet for the more violent, competitive sides of our personalities. That said, there are still some lines I have problems crossing. In Oblivion, I had very little remorse stabbing a sleeping man to death in the first Dark Brotherhood quest, but in Bioshock I couldn't bring myself to kill the little sisters. :-/ Everyone has their own limits.

I usually play a goody two shoes mage type character, but I think im going to start playing a slightly more evil thief type. Not gonna go on a bunch of murder sprees, but i'll be more then happy to help people clean their houses of their possesions

Because it's more exciting to do stuff you can do in real life? without going to jail anyway.

I find games are usually less rewarding to the evil.

I often end up being evil, the characters I play the most are good though.

I can usually play a pure good character, or an evil one, but what I find hard to do is indiscriminate evil acts. I would not kill someone for no reason, but I could do it easily if I needed it for a quest, to reach kill limit for a perk etc. There just needs to be something in it for me, regardless how small.

Actually, I think it is because killing someone makes me feel like I am losing something. I am losing that random NPC who walks around my world, or that dialogue, or whatever. So, I need to gain something in place of it.

my first character i plan on playing (theif) is a good person. said character is only evil if you consider stealing from the filthy rich wrong. sort of robin hood style character.
the other character i will play at the same time (2 at once hehe) will be a good wizard.
i just dont seem to go for bad characters. ill try with skyrim, but i guess oblivions psychic guards put me off doing it in oblivion, or maybe im just a naturally good person ;)

It has a lot to do with there being no actual real world consequences. Many people in game do atrocious things, for example I like to make Black Soul Gems. I do that though because its a game and the cops aren't going to show up at the door.. If they WOULD show up, I would be much more moral. As it is, god help the random non-quest giver NPC wearing a piece of armor I want.

I can't stand being a bad person in real life.
I can't stand being a bad person in a game.

Kind of a shame, the only way I can even try do Dark Brotherhood quests is pure arcade mode: turn my mind off, just rush in, skip all conversations.
