A new take on Radiant story?

Post » Wed Oct 12, 2011 12:12 pm

I know a lot of us were under the impression that radiant story only changed certain aspects of quests, but a recent tweet made by Pete Hines confirms that the game technically never ends, since it will create random quests. You can go on Twitter to see the full answer, because I'm on my Ipod and too lazy to type...

He also said that they have more info, interviews, etc. up their sleeves.

What types of quests will those probably be? I'm thinking you'll have your fetch quest, thieving/assassination type quests, helping out the random victim of a burglary of some sort.. Actually they'll probably be a lot like the little random things that happened in red dead redemption. Although those got pretty repetitive after awhile and I ended up mostly ignoring them.
But it will liven the world up a bit and make things feel more random and unstaged.

It should be cool, especially generating replacements for NPCs you've killed that were supposed to offer you quests...at least I think that's what I've heard. I am totally waiting for mods to come out with additional quest material, etc. however.

Can't wait for mods to come out to increase the number of those random quests. Then the game will really feel endless. Just imagine, 100 different quests that can all be randomly generated anywhere in the world *passes out*

They said that radiant story is the ability to randomize parts of quests. They said that it's possible to create something that's totally random but that most quests are hand designed with certain elements randomized.

I am surprised though to hear it's in, since originally I recall hearing that total randomization just wasn't that fun. I suppose some random quests doesn't hurt anything.

I've got the feeling the word 'random' was used loosely and between brackets...

Yeah there are probably a series of generic quest templates that are randomly chosen with the variables in those templates randomized.

if its equal in variance/ fun to red dead redemption, that would be good enough for me. i just cant wait to see what modders will do, implementing new kinds of quests, adding more to the list... it will be good at release, but raidiant quests will be AMAZING once the modders are through.

I'm only tentatively excited about this feature. It sounds absolutely fantastic, but I fear it'll probably be much more limited in reality than we all hope. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised though...!

If you are really enjoying playing, say a mage, then when you have done the main quest and the College, and want to carry on, you will have something to do still, without having to go out of character and join the DB and companions, so sounds good enough to me.

...which is precisely what the Daggerfall's random quests were about. I am looking forward to this :)

it goes of a formula

what type of quest- who fits the requirements to be giver-location you haven't been or that's suitable-monster-(optional)person you know who is at said place-reward

After doing a (hopefully) large number of random quests, you WILL encounter repetitions eventually. And as a 50+ level demi-god, some potatoes for killing a troll isnt going to cut it anymore. But as long as the unique quests are good, I have no complains.

I'm excited about it for a slightly different reason. It is quite possible to use such a system to generate jobs for your guild members after you become the guild master. Nothing too fancy, maybe allowing you to accept and choose a number of guild members for a mission to clear a small low level dungeon that you have already cleared and respawn.

The guild members will actually move there and fight instead of disappearing for a week and leave some stupid gold in a stupid chest. Will it be there? Unlikely. But one can hope.

No, but it's a very good addition to the game if they can meke them feel more realistic and meaningful than the ones in Daggerfall.

I believe what Hines was referring to was the 'miscellaneous objectives'. If you all remember, there's an achievement for completing 50 misc objectives.

They will probably have things like "my wife/son/etc. has gone missing in a nearby cave! Help me!". Or possibly "I need to you to retrieve a special item from a nearby building/cave/etc." Mini things like this that they can do in infinite amounts and still have some gameplay meaning.
