When are you expecting the 'gold' announcement?

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2011 2:17 pm

I thought going gold meant you sold a certain amount of the product [I know for CDs it is 500,000].

So I am confused. :(

I wouldn't give them the CE case anyway. Need something to put the DVD in :P. But I'm guessing that close to around the release date, they would probably give you the standard case too. Too early for used copies.

They'd be like, i need your old case and disc before i can give you a new one, your like, i need 200 dollars...now.

Not in games. It's a term used when the game is done and ready to printed and shipped out to retailers. It's also a term that I believe was adopted from CD's, so I believe you may have the wrong definition of the term for CD's too. I think for sold CD's reaching a certain amount is "going Platinum".

What is this "gold" or "going gold" mean?

It means the "gold," or "master" disc is made, and they're going to start making all the copies people can buy.

Well thanks for the info but I am almost 100% that CDs can go gold [500,000] platinum [1 million], and more like diamond [pretty sure 10 million].

So now that I know it is how long it takes for it to be ready to be mass produced I would guess 2 weeks from now.

Another reason for it being called "Going gold" is because the master disk they use for mass production is yep you guessed it....gold.

I'm gonna bet the 25th. That gives them almost 3 weeks to mass produce and ship to retailers.

That sounds about right. Pete also said PC Requirements should be announced next week.

Not quite—optical discs are pressed from a glass master that's been metallized with nickel, not gold.

I'm guessing around 2 weeks. Now sure how long it takes to get millions of copies ready, but 1-2 weeks sounds like a fair estimate. We already know they've been developing the manuals.

I don't think it will be more than two or three weeks before release. It takes time to produce the physical media after all. So that would make it one or two weeks from now.

Just so you guys know, Borderlands went gold 2 days before release. Printing CDs and stuff is quick.

2 days!? lmao. 11/11/11 Bethesda will have to be ready to distribute the game around THE WHOLE world on ALL 3 platforms. It will be about 2 weeks not 2 days.

Right, this once confused me too. "Gold" in the music industry means selling a certain number of copies. It started with vinyl records, so it has absolutely nothing to do with the process of making CDs. They just happen be called the same thing :). To further confuse things, what we call "Gold" in the game industry would be the "Master" in the music industry.

I'm not expecting it because I don't care at all and it has no meaning at all.

You're not expecting it? If it doesn't happen then the game doesn't release.

I say probably in about 2 weeks..
Pete Hines said they think they will have the PC specs out next week..I expect it to be near that or shortly after.

Then again with all the leak info not sure they will get the game out there too early..because well, we know why.

Yup. I think the leaks will push this as far as they possibly can while ensuring retailers have their copies for 11.11.11.
