Mod - Oblivion remake in the Skyrim engine...

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:23 am

I was wondering how hard it would be to completely remake Oblivion using the new engine, as a mod. The voices and music could be re-used and maybe the higher res textures could also be used and maybe upscaled. What are the odds?

This has been said before (a while ago) but unlikely. I certainly wouldn't want to do it, all that time spent doing unoriginal work would be boring.

Take your expectations on how long time you think it takes to make this mod, and multiply that with [insert large number here]

Not really, using assets from another game is not allowed :nono:

I threw a few key words in there to answer this in advance. Namely, 'New Engine' and 'Higher Res Textures'. I love Oblivion and have wondered how good it would look with graphics on par with Skyrim. I also forgot about the legal implications.
What about if you had to have a valid copy of the game on your hard drive for the mod to work?

Morroblivion required this.

Still not allowed.

Hm. Well, like you and others stated, it's illegal. And idk, i just don't get why you're thinking of this, before even swinging a sword in Skyrim. :spotted owl:

Illegal. See: Morroblivion.

Not the best example. Morroblivion was hit because it directly ported Morrowind resources over to Oblivion, which is 100% illegal.

Should somebody wish to hand-model every single model, re-write every piece of dialogue, re-record every piece of voice acting, etc, wish to do it, there is certainly legal precedent that it is allowed. There are dozens of "Morrowind in Oblivion" mods or even a few "Oblivion in Morrowind" mods that are perfectly legal, because every single thing in the game is either from the game the mod is set in (in other words, using Cheydinhal architecture in Seyda Neen or something similar, as TlOvSm or some similar name does) or painstakingly remade from scratch (such as hand-modeling an exact replica of a Redoran hut to use in Oblivion, as Silgrad Tower and Phitt's Sheogorad project work).

Still, it is a lot of work. Unless you're completely willing to pretty much reuse Skyrim assets for EVERYTHING, you'd need modelers, texturers, voice actors. You'd need a full design and art team, though you'd be able to get by without the programmers.

Well it took Bethesda years to make Oblivion... don't see how it would take much less to re-make Oblivion.

Yeah... probably take YEARS... I had a lovely Caldera mod for OB, which allowed you to teleport to the Caldera Mages Guild in Morrowind. Wasn't completed, but I modded for myself, by adding details to the town to make it more complete. Was a nice blast from the past, so to speak. I added one house for myself, so that I always had a home in Morrowind :)

Back to the topic... probably won't happen. But maybe someone will mod one of those towns in, like Caldera.

I'm for an Imperial City Mod, where the capital is in some type of lock down. Imagine a quest that'll allow you to assist in opening its doors again, as some kinda covert agent for the empire, but will force you to leave upon completion of the quest to avoid persecution.... Sorta like the Fallout 3 quest that allowed you back into Vault 101, one last time.

There are mods out there that will really enhance Oblivion appearance graphically, is this what your referring too? I know your talking about the Creation Engine, but these mods and providing you have a beast to run it, can look really good and I would say in my opinion close to the new Skyrim appearance. Not sure, just saying, they are really amazing improvements. You should try Unique Landscapes, and Godrays and there is one for increasing texture size and many others. It looks absolutely stunning. Almost like your playing a different game. I'm just speaking realistically as far as time goes to do this and a possible litigation if it was to become a issue, because of popularity.

Yeah, no offense but I don't really get this mentality. Why would I want some unstable version of a game I've already played for hundreds of hours on end? And yeah, you can bet that if something like that was possible the end result would be absolutely riddled with crashes and other issues.

So, short answer: Naaaaah.

Why would you want to play, which I consider the least impressive title in the TES, in HD format when you have either Skyrim or that impressive graphical overhaul of Morrowind, which combines Story & Graphics together, which Oblivion lacked. At any rate, Skyrim is hopefully the culmination of both, if the previews and theme songs are any indication. ;]
