I recall an interview with Todd where he pointed out that a player (playing the demo) could have mined ore if they'd been carrying a pick axe.

Makes me wonder if we'll be able to chop with any old axe or if we'll have to obtain a specific tree cutting axe.

It requires a pick axe.

We don't know, but I would say it's a fair guess seeing as there was a woodcutter's axe in Todd's inventory at E3.

A pickax is for mining, you'd use a woodsman's ax or a hatchet for woodcutting.
