Feasibility of Dark (Demon) Soul-style combat DLC or Mod

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:56 pm

Being a big fan of open world RPG, I know I will have fun exploring the lands of Skyrim.
One thing in the past that has, again and again, stopped me from continuing my adventure whether in Morrowind, Oblivion or Fallout 3 is Bethesda's rather ....mediocre combat system. It just feel flat and monotonous to me. There have been some mods addressing this issue but imho they failed to live up to the expectations. It is unsurprising and the creator of such mods are blameless in this, creating a new combat system is a monumental task.
Luckily, these days we have dark / demon souls combat-system which I think is really really good, at least its the best one i've tried.
How likely / feasible it is to incorporate Dark Soul -style combat into Skyrim, be it via DLC or better yet a massive mod ?

What is special about Dark Souls combat system? From what I see its *Hack-Slash* *Roll* *Throw Fire-ball* *Hack-slash*

Am I missing something?

Trust me, they won't rewrite the combat system of Skyrim. Maybe they make it possible to blick while dual wielding at some point, but that is the only change I believe might happen.
Too specify: They=BGS
Very dedicated modders might rewrite the combat system.

It's fun, unlike oblivion and skyrim's system where you just swing your sword like a [censored].

Ive never seen a DLC for any game, overhaul the core mechanics. This is an RPG, not a hack-n-slash. Don't expect anything of that nature to ever be officially made.

As for a mod, who knows.

DLC's don't change the engine like that, so no.

Mod? Maybe, but only if someone is extremely dedicated.

Uh, Have you played any other action RPG games besdies Dark Souls? I mean it is good but is not that good. Each weapon has two ways of attacking. Skyrim already looks better in that respect. Zelda has much better combat lol.

IMO FPS gameplay has it's limits in a game with swords as of right now. The only thing that would improve the system imo is something like rolling in a realistic way(which is weird in FP), short hops(not full blown jumps, maybe hold down jump button for a more powerful jump? seems like a better system imo), flips? Counters, techniques, special ways to attack similar to the thrusting attack in the game already, just more of them. Again weird in FP. Ideas?

Its fun, entertaining, engaging, has variety in terms of fighting styles. Plus I love how its combat has a tactical element to it. The Elderscrolls could benefit greatly from Dark/Demon Souls combat style.

They will not do something like that for DLC but you can expect many combat mods for skyrim, like deadly reflex for oblivion.

I could say the same thing about Elder Scrolls combat. What specifically is good about Dark Souls combat.

Then go forth and multiply into the land of Dark Souls and take with you the Forums blessing.

I honestly dont see it. Every review and gameplay video all I see is.

Some guy strafing with his shield constantly up does a roll, swings his sword then rolls away with his shield up then throws a fireball I dont see whats engaging about that.

Its not hack and slash at all.

It requires patience and timing for you to take enemies out, if your stamina bar goes to low you can't successfully block or attack.

Honestly we are comparing two totally DIFFERENT animals.

Dark Souls combat belongs with Dark Souls cause it matches the difficulty.

and Skyrims combat belongs with it, because it fits that style of game.

Please reserve your opinions until you've actually played the game. I haven't seen any frantic slashing like Oblivion so far.

I've been wondering about this game as well. It looks very linear w/ the same enemies, spawning in the same areas and doing the same things. It is an RPG? Or is it one of those Action w/ RPG "Elements"? Meaning there is no consequences from dialog, just dialog selection. I don't mean to sound brash. I'm just asking, because I honestly don't know.

Never played it. Wasn't very impressed by Youtude trailers and gameplay videos. Prefers first person. So no thanks.

Please keep opinions out of discussions where some kind of substantiated fact is requested.

Also, you've dodged the question: What is special about Dark Soul's combat system?

I'm not seeing it. Demon's Souls (and what I've seen of Dark Souls) has fairly standard hack'n'slash mechanics. They do it well, but not enough to come on these forums and suggest the developers try and copy it. Especially given all of the manufactured Skyrim vs. Dark Souls drumming that the IGN article trolled up.

Or is it that you are suggesting that they introduce mobs with specific patterns that you have to catch on to? Frankly, while that works for Demon's Souls, it would feel entirely too fake and contrived for an Elder Scrolls game. These are meant to act like living creatures, not cardboard cuts outs you have to knock down every time you walk through a narrow corridor-level.
