Midnight Release + Steam = Sad Panda?

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2011 2:53 am

I have tried searching through all the steam related threads but all I find is steam hate / PC vs. console wars. So I am just going to ask one simple question straight up.

I pre-ordered both the PC (retail) and PS3 collectors edition since I haven't made up my mind which version I wanted. Both have their advantages / disadvantages in my eyes. In light of some new information I learned in the sticky interview on this forum I am now leaning strongly towards sticking with the PC version, which leads me to my question.

My Gamestop is holding a midnight release for Skyrim *wow shocker i know* since I am most likely getting the PC version has there been any OFFICIAL word on when steam will be unlocking the game? I was severely tweaked on other midnight releases where steam was involved, I would get my copy at midnight only to find I cannot access the game until midday on the following day.

This could be the make or break factor for me of which version to get (1st at least ;) )

Has there been any official word yet?

Steam will most likely unlock the game at 12:00 midnight 11/11/11, Pacific Standard Time, as they do for nearly every big release

PST? [censored]!

I wonder if they'll unlock it at a different time in Russia. DA2 did and it was cracked around 10pm EST.

Just as long as you can install from the disc and don't have to wait ages for Steam to needlessly install the full game over the internet i'l be fine.

If you have the disc you shouldn't have to download anything (barring some kind of small patch or update)

Bear in mind, even if you have the disc early and Steam hasn't unlocked the game yet, you won't be allowed to play

This. Between me and my boyfriend we've ordered 15 'new releases' from Steam. They've all unlocked at midnight. They actually allowed us to download them a day early so we could play them exactly at 12am.

Hells yeah. Time to set my Steam geographical zone to Easter Island.

BRINK unlocked at midnight on release day. I even pre-loaded it so I could play right away. I would assume that Skyrim will unlock in a similar way.

That is exactly what I am afraid of....

God I hate twitter I'm such a twitter noob :D I did manage to find what I think you are referring to, but I also think you misunderstood. All Pete said was that the game itself would be available at 12:01 am in every timezone. This has nothing to do directly when steam will be unlocking it, he is just confirming that 12:01 is pretty much the cutoff where they can no longer sue someone for breaking the street date ;) Again I am a complete twitter noob so If there was another comment made could you please attach a link I would appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure Steam doesn't do unlocks "by timezone". I've preordered numerous games on Steam and they always unlock at midnight PST. I am not in PST. Maybe they're doing something new for Skyrim, but I really doubt it. Probably midnight PST as usual.

And yeah if you buy the digital version, you will be given a few days to download it ahead of time (but you won't be able to run the game). Usually you'll get a 3 or 4 day head start... so I'd say you could probably expect to start downloading Skyrim around the 7th of Nov.

No official word, but since RAGE unlocked on Steam at 9pm PST / 12am EST, I think there is a possibility of the same for Skyrim.
