"For Auld Lang Syne" CTD : Fallout: New Vegas

I've done everything but talk to Daisy Whitman re: Remnants Power Armor. When I talk to her, she tells me it will take a few hours to be trained (even though I already have PA training from BoS), the armor is placed in my inventory, and the screen goes black. Then BOOM crash-to-desktop. It happens every time I do this. Thinking it may have been related to the mods I was using, I deselected all of them and loaded my save; no dice. I would really, really like to have this quest complete before I finish the game, and this is causing me to stop playing until I can finish it.

I'm very disappointed in the number of bugs this game has. It's like no polishing was done at all before it was released. Obsidian, were you rushed into releasing something before you were done with it? Because that's what it feels like. The launcher crashes 75% of the time, forcing me to restart it over and over until I can actually click 'Play.' There are typos everywhere, and tons of places where the spoken dialog doesn't match the subtitles at all. Unkillable creatures, bad textures, poor geometry (stuck a lot, plus there are some places where you can see through poorly connected polygons, or even see the seams between textures), bad creature pathing, creatures getting stuck in the ground or in world geometry, etc etc etc. It just feels like the game should have had quite a bit more QA time before it was released.

Your video drivers aren't the newest, but since this CTD is repeatable at a specific event I would suggest you verify your game cache before trying to update your video drivers.

Verify integrity of game cache:

1. Load Steam
2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

My guess is one of the resources associated with the armor has become corrupted - or possibly something altered something related to the power armor training perk.

As a last resort - and being sure to create a seperate save before doing this - you can try the following command in the debug console (hit "~" to bring up the command line):

setpccanusepowerarmor 0

Do that before initiating the sequence where they train you and give you the armor. It should be detecting that you already have the training and go to alternate dialog commenting on that (or at least not talking about how you're about to train.) Since it is not doing this, I think it is not unlikely that it is somehow setting that variable to "2" - though it really shouldn't be doing that. By setting it to "0" before you begin that sequence you should gaurantee that it is not set to an invalid value. If you find you get the untrained message when trying to equip the armor after that sequence (assuming no crash) then just use the same command but a "1" for the value.

I did this. The launcher bug seems to be gone. But the game still crashes when she gives me the armor. I upgraded to the newest video drivers too. Still crashes.

Alright- did you try that command then?

If you are worried about achievements then just execute the command and create a new separate save (make sure you do not have power armor equipped when you use that command). Exit the game and load that save and then try to get that sequence to finish without crashing (achievements are only disabled during the session you used the command).

Do you have Arcane with you?
I had a repeatable crash just at t the same location. My game crashed right after talking to Orion, and Arcane talked to me. I dismissed Arcane after gaining full access to the bunker, and actually had to wait a couple of minutes to make sure Arcane had left the bunker. Then I was able to complete the quest.

Do you have Arcane with you?
I had a repeatable crash just at t the same location. My game crashed right after talking to Orion, and Arcane talked to me. I dismissed Arcane after gaining full access to the bunker, and actually had to wait a couple of minutes to make sure Arcane had left the bunker. Then I was able to complete the quest.

Arcade already left my party after I spoke to Orion. I told him to go help the people of Freeside during the fight, so he's gone.

I'll try the command given above, see if that helps.

EDIT: Tried the console command. Game still crashes. Stupid broken scripting. The entire conversation tree with Judah was broken, now that I think back on it. He talked about how I needed to be trained to use the armor, even though I was standing around with power armor on already.

EDIT 2: Tried starting a slightly older save file and using the console command before talking to Judah. Still no dice.

Ok, I ended up just using console commands to skip past that part of the quest and give myself the Remnant's power armor. It was the only way I could do it.

.....aaaaand now I can't do the 'You'll Know When It Happens' quest. I talk to Grant, say I'm ready, the screen goes dark (to pass time), and the game crashes.

The new patch did not fix my crashes, even though it supposedly 'fixed' issues with 'You'll Know When It Happens' quest.

I really, really would like to be able to complete this game as intended. I don't want to think that I've wasted 84 HOURS and OVER $70 on a broken game.

I wish Bethesda would actually help me figure out what's wrong. I can't believe they didn't put a crash logger in this game. How hard is it?

Damn dude, you really haven't had a lucky streak when it comes to this game. I can't help you, since I have no clue when it comes to computers, but have you actually emailed Beth's tech support? I'm just asking cause it sounds like you've had nothing from them. I mean, they aren't all that onto it, I emailed them and they told me to update my drivers, which at a few months old should NOT be the problem, and as it turns out were not. It was a corrupt save issue, and when I asked them how I could avoid this happening, they said "I don't know." I found out from the forums that simply disabling autosave helps prevent corrupted saves. /rant. Anyway give that a try, maybe they'll be more useful to you.
Other than that rather useless suggestion, I just wish to express sympathy and wish you luck. It svcks how this game runs perfect for half the users, and the other half can't play it thoroughly at all.

FYI, there is one glaring error to correct, which is certain to cause SOME game errors.

"Page File: 4245MB used, 12130MB available"

For playing games, a single GB of loaded background programs and services is the max to have. With that repaired, try again. No guarantee that it's a specific fix for this exact situation, but you'll be preventing a lot of other potential problems.

Yeah, I mailed them. They had me do a few things, which didn't help, then said they were going to escalate me to the next tier of support. That was on the 4th. I haven't heard anything yet. I emailed them a couple days ago to remind them, and they said they'd get someone on it soon. I'm figuring it'll be after the holidays before I hear anything, though.

Guess what? This problem still exists. I finally dusted off F:NV and thought 'Hey, maybe after all this time it'll be working!'

I was totally wrong.

I really would either like to be able to finish this game I bought A YEAR AGO or I'd like my money back BECAUSE THE PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE PERMANENTLY.
