A little idea for the map and the compass

Post » Thu Sep 10, 2009 7:29 pm

I'm playing Oblivion as I type this, and I realized something. I don't know what dungeons I've been in. Well, I do, but let's just pretend like I didn't.

I think that Icons on the map and compass would tell you what you've done in the dungeon.

A red mark on the icon would mean that you have completed the dungeon and cleared all of the fog off the interior map.

A blue dot would mean you have entered it but haven't discovered everything.

A green dot would mean that You've been in the dungeon, but the enemies or loot respawned(If that kind of thing will be in the game)

what do you guys think?

I think that this is the best idea since having ingridients automaticially move to your inventory.

Do it like Fallout. An empty marker for an unexplored place and a filled in one for a place you have been.

That's like oblivion too. I meant different colors mean different things.

I don't think id want all that info. Some of that stuff I want to find out on my own, like if a cave has re spawned or not. Or if I havent fully explored a place or not.

That's a great idea. I would like finished quests to have strikethrough so I know what I've done when flicking through my journal (I've only used xbox for more recent games so don't know if pc does this)

A bit too much, one color for found locations un-entered, one color for locations entered, and one for ones unexplored.

Well what if we just had the option to do so then?

If they did it really stylishly like with a green ink splotch or dash it would look super awesome.

I think, with the new engine, the compass should be reworked entirely/changed to something else
I would be disappointed if all they did was tweak the oblivion compass

Maybe it would just tell you if you have been there before with a red dash. It could also have a little not on it saying what you looted from inside but you would need to press a button to see it.

This sounds like a great idea.
This may be a little off, but I would also like to be able to mark my map with things such as an X of different colors, and they could mean what I want in my own way. This way they dont need to check off if you cleared the cave, you can do it yourself. also make it so NPCs can now do this so you dont have the unfound locations, instead its just an X marks the spot kind of thing.

Both ideas are good. A green one shows that you have been there and a red one shows that you have discovered it but you haven't been in it.

I had similar idea for a long time now, because too often I dont know if I already explored the cave/ruins or just pased buy it leaving it for later. But I dont think I would like to see some markers showing me that on the map... maby some indicator on the compass showing me that I have entered that cave/ruin before (if I did so). But I dont whant a load of diferent indicators showing me things like if I fully explored the cave/ruin or just a small part of it, or if there's anything new in there since the last time I've been there. Just a simple indicator showing if I've been there before. For example an open door implied in the indicator on the compass if I've been there. I dont like a simple "dot" on the icon idea...

Maybe we could mark our own maps. How's that for immersion?

It would be even better if they got rid of the compass and it was like Morrowind where you had to search and explore to find where you were going. And they better take fast travel out. Fast travel and the compass ruined Oblivion.

I remember hearing about an oblivion mod that does this, but don't quote me on that. And if its a popular mod i wouldn't be surprised if it was used in ESV

The map should no longer be in your 'menu'. It should be an object that you start off with in the beginning of the game, or something that you find along the 'training' area. You'd hold down a button and your map would pop out and so would a quill or some type of writing utensil. You can browse your map from there and if you see something that you want to mark, you just drag your quill over whatever you're going to mark and hold a button that would make a mark with your quill on the map.

If you can't see you map, you're going to have to find some sort of light source. Your characters writing becomes more legible if the map is set on a desk or a wall. Ink can be purchased from stores and or found. Different colored inks are supplied at said shops.

Yes, because we really need the magical compass to tell us MORE things.

It's bad enough that it magically shows us where things are that we have never seen before, and shows us where NPCs are at all times, we now need it tell us what dungeons we've explored? Just let us draw on the map, problem solved.

The real problem is, we need a way to toggle off the compass/map markers that doesn't break the games. You can mod the compass off in Oblivion but then you can't complete any quests. Almost all quests have NPCs just say "I'll mark the dungeon on your map, then you go out!". Well if you have this disabled...you're in trouble. There's no way to find the dungeon now! NPCs don't give you directions like they did in Morrowind, you're out of luck. We need a good middle ground. Either give us directions and allow us to toggle off the compass, or circle the general area something is in and let us find it ourselves!

There is a difference in "Let me mark the dungeon on your map" and "Go to x cave" with no further direction.

When NPCs say "Let me mark this on your map" the little square with the cave symbol shows up on your map. This is equivalent to the NPC taking your PC's map and putting an x where the cave should be. This makes sense and I don't mind this.

When NPCs say "Go to x cave" and don't tell you where the cave is, but the magic green arrow shows up on your map showing you where it is, that doesn't make sense.

In my game, I've disabled the green arrow, not the square icon. If you've got both disabled, I can see where that could be a problem. In my experience with the particular mod that I use, NPCs either give good enough directions or mark the place on my map.
