Another baffling oversight by Bethesda

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2011 8:48 am

well, thats odd... they had it so items you stole while undetected would not be marked stolen, now its changed back to the way it was in oblivion?

...wait, how can we be sure this is true, just because its in the manual?

incase you dont remember... i am pretty sure the morrowind manual mentioned conjuring creatures in town would cause the guards to attack... but that was obviously not true, because they never did that.

i think oblivion's manual said the same thing, but i could be wrong... havent looked at that in forever.

so maybe this is a mistake in skyrim's manual?

we cant be sure until its confirmed by a bethesda employee, someone tweet pete about it!

Roland, that's called exploiting the system. You like to cheat, fine by me. I don't.

Now you're being dense. It's not about exploiting the system. There are many times when I've stolen some valuable items and put them on display in my house (just for the heck of it, not to dodge the law). There is no penalty for stolen items that I am not personally carrying. To lose all your stolen goods simply because you have them in your gunnysack is arbitrarily punitive and imbalanced.

Not sure I care really :s It just motivates me not to get cught and you can kinda see why when during late-game stages and money ie. fines arent an issue that we need something at stake were we to get caught and jailed.

It's intentional, therefore it's not an oversight.

This. If it helps, imagine that those goods have been reported as stolen.

I love how you accuse me of something you're being, classic! You love to compare two different things as if they're the same, it's like trying to debate with these crazy protesters.

We don't know if stealing items in one hold will lead to confiscation upon capture in another hold. So, calm down.

Here's how I would have done it:

Generic stolen Items (Food, silverware, unenchanted items, etc) would not be marked as stolen.

Rare stolen items (anything enchanted, or worth a high value) would be marked stolen *IF* you were arrested in the town you stole it in, as the reason would be items of high value and rarity would be reported stolen to the guards.

But it's really not too much of an issue I suppose.

I'm just saying, you claim for Skyrim to be a game attempting realism when I can ask you to go outside and see if there is a dragon to fight to which we both already know the answer. The point is at the end of the day, it's still a video game and some consequences just remain abstract such as losing all your stolen items when arrested. Not everything is going to be 1:1 realism outside of dragons and all that. Complaining about the idea of losing all stolen items because there's no way the guards would know is logically the same as me arguing that when that fire Mr. Dragon blows on our characters hits us, we should burn alive right then and there unless we stop, drop, and roll. Both standpoints argue for what you would naturally "expect" if those situations were ever real, but it's a video game and sometimes mechanics outweigh immersion. If it's such a big worry to you, then don't get caught. ;) Or go for the PC version to mod it out.

Well, I actually would prefer one hit kills from dragon fire. With a roll, you could dodge it. I'd be for that. Also, weapons wouldn't have magical +20 damage, instead relying on where you place your hits and what material the weapon is made from. I could go on.

I'd be 100% in favor of these things.

its a gameplay abstraction of people reporting their stolen goods and guards confiscating what may or may not match up with the report; some guards dont particularly care whether they have good evidence that you stole the item in question or not, as long as the merchant gets his stolen stock replaced, everyone's happy (except you, but nobody cares what criminal scum thinks).

no, it doesnt make sense every item you've ever stolen has been properly described, reported, and filed away in the photographic memories of every guard everywhere, but a decent crime system HAS to have these kinds of supernaturally effective policing methods to make crime a genuine risk.

and yes, you can of course just drop everything before getting arrested, but changing the "marked as stolen" system would just make that exploit even easier to pull off, so game balance is broken either way. its just more annoying the way it currently is, and annoying consequences are kind of the intended downside to criminal behaviour for skyrim and reality.

dont i remember hearing how NPC's can interact with items you drop? try to return them, steal them, etc? if so, that exploit would actually have the realistic consequence of people doing whatever they want with your pile of treasure while you rot in jail, so maybe it wont be so bad :icecream: .

Maybe they'll confiscate your stolen items because the owners still have their names on it.

It's not two different things, you simply seem to have trouble comprehending the anology of an easy workaround being poor design. I agree about feeling like you're arguing with crazy protesters though.

Bah! What fool would allow those pesky hot blooded meat sacks to capture them? Surely no Argonian that I know of!

So, dropping stolen goods in front of the guard, and having hidden them safely away from prying eyes is the same thing to you. You've got to be kidding me.

Oh noes, not every little stupid detail is 100% realistic in a video GAME! Its just really totally inconceivable that they might want to do things based on gameplay to make a certain aspect(like thievery) have some sort of risk or drawback.

In a non eyerolling snide response perhaps theyre confiscated and put into the evidence chest because those items were reported stolen, since they already searched you before putting you in jail?
