I just noticed something about the lips :/

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2011 11:47 pm

Lol, cosmetics were in use on Earth thousands of years before the Viking era.

I would imagine that even on Nirn, a commoner could, for example, stain her lips with berries, or apply berry juice mixed with various grease/fats.

I would imagine that the more wealthy could do better. Lip coloring would not be unknown.

As for scents, even a poor Nord girl could apply the scent of sweet smelling flowers to her body.

In my opinion, the concept of colored lips in Skyrim is not extraordinary.

It's only the bottom pair of lips that matter to me

Guys I just noticed from looking at the presets that there are no sliders so that I can make my character look like the Elephant man. I personally find this really disappointing. I can't believe Bethesda would be so inconsiderate as to totally reject the unanimous desire of the fans to make their own Dovhakiins suffer from John Merrick's disease. I canceled my pre-order immediately after realizing i couldn't make a completely deformed character and suggest you do the same....

Well Todd, this is what happens when you don't give us anything new to discuss.

Beth just (oddly) decided that instead of showing a range of options with the presets, they'd all go for "ragged barbarian" with all of them.

...mmm...and so hot!

Did I say it was a big deal? No. I was just pointing it out for discussion. And I do think the depth of character creation has decreased in some aspects and increased in others. I do not think TES is living up to its full potential. (merged cuirass/greaves, no degrading of weapons/armor, etc.) But in other areas, it is doing well. (dual wielding, dragons, etc.) It's really sad that people cannot just have a mature conversation about the lipstick and instead everyone has to complain about the thread or post sarcastic remarks.

Females and males, but mostly females, in antiquity used naturally occuring dyes made from nut husks, seeds, berries, crushed fand steeped foliage/ flowers, insects, and minerals mixed with clays, beeswaxes, animal fats and plant residues.
Metallic hues exist even in biological creatures, take beetle exosekeltons for example.
It is perfectly plausible that the denizens of Skyrim should choose to apply protectant and even colored salves to their faces and other minimally socially acceptable of their bodies as a prophylaxis against tissue damage from the ravages of extreme cold.
It would also make sense that these cosmetics offer not only physical protection, but disugise or attractive enhancements as well.

Alas, my avvy didn't feel he needed it.

in fact, it was mainly males of that era that used perfumes/dyes/wigs/makeup etc
and the colour pink was seen as a masculine colour up until the late 1800s
it was relatively uncommon in females...

but of course, this is TES, so all that isnt worth the noise off a nirnroot

The reason there are so many sarcastic comments is because this is another thread in a long line of nit picky threads and people are just tired of constant complaints to things that we may realize are not even issues when we get our hands on the game. There could very well be a way to turn of lipstick. The already have the male no lipstick texture so it seems very possible that you can just turn it off.

"It's really sad that people cannot just have a mature conversation about the lipstick", really? How can I take a phrase like that a seriously? It sounds totally absurdists. I'll agree that some of the glossy lips from the presets look dumb but I still think this thread is unnecessary at least until it is proven that lipstick cannot be turned off.

I'm using a 40" HDTV as my monitor....the pics are NOT 2". And I've seen a character creation video and it actually seemed to me that they dropped it a notch. But it WAS a khajiit so there might just be less options for them...

Seen the same video, it was leaked video from a game event, crappy quality on the camera, and he didn't even show the sliders he just rushed by it.

Of course im not going to use a preset, but I also heard that they dont have the three color sliders for hair any more and that they just have one. That right there is a big blow to customization. Of course I will still buy/love the game but I don't think it's going to live up to its full potential. And it's weird that in the time frame that TES is.....they dont even have guns....but they have every color shade of lipstick we have today? I just dont think it fits.

You "heard" this, source? If you are basing this on the six month old alpha build given as a demo at a gaming convention, wouldn't it make sense they would turn a lot of options off to encourage players to get through creation and play the game?

I know this is an assumption, but it's lot more logical than spending all that time graphically on the characters and then take away the tools to refine the static look of the player character. That...just doesn't make any sense.

Also, as has been explained to you exhaustively, makeup and facepaint have been around since the beginning of time. I understand if in your playstyle you would prefer to not have it, but to call it "stupid" based on this erroneous assumption is rather ignorant.

I see nothing wrong with wanting to discuss the OPs topic.

Although many of us have been on the forums for quite some time, I see that new people are signing on almost every day.

They may have an appreciation for discussion of topics with which they are not necessarily familiar.

Several helpful forumites have provided some historicaly based information with respect to the topic that could be entirely new to some, and beneficial to others.

As to the glossy and colored lips, even if the lips are not colored, some ancient peoples used their version of chapstick to help chapping, and protection from the elements. It seems that in the colder environments of Skyrim, it would be most practical to do so.

I do not find the idea of colored, glossy lips to be earth shaking, but discussion of the topic is probably more beneficial than harmful.

Your post is eloquent, rational and well written. Now if the OP and the following negative responses would have been written this way, we wouldn't be where we are with most of the threads on this forum. The kneejerk reaction isn't to the subject, but rather how it is handled by certain opinionated posters.

Some people want their women to be battle hardened Nord warriors, all combat training and disdainful of such feminine display. Others like myself, will play sorceresses who love fine clothing, feminine hairstyles, expensive shoes and the kind of make up only available to noblewomen. The game gives us the choice, and choices are not things to be sniffed at.
