Fallout New Vegas fps weirdness

Post » Sun Oct 16, 2011 2:48 pm

Hey guys,

Having a problem with my fps in FNV. Yesterday I was playing and having a usual fps of 30-60 when suddently I noticed that I had a steady 60 fps (capped there with vsync) almost all the time, in and outdoors. I was surprised, as I don't remember doing anything more than changing between high quality and ultra quality settings to see the difference.

I also went to certain places where I remembered getting a 30ish fps with high and ultra settings, but this time it was a steady 60! This was with ultra 8AA&16AF maxed out.

Next day I boot up FNV and notice that I'm back to the usual 30-60 range again. I know I'm not giving much to go on, but do you guys have any ideas what's going on here?

RIG:

ATI Radeon HD 4890 - 11.9 drivers (latest)
AMD Phenom II x4 3.0ghz
4GB RAM
Realtek sound - latest drivers

Fallout New Vegas has the latest patch. I'm using Gamebooster and Fraps while playing.

Thanks in advance.

Firstly, I want to know your secret too :P

Secondly, it could be the cells you were playing in. I've noticed, even between fiddling with every setting on each playthrough, certain locations would play rather smoothly. If you've been to Jacobstown, for example, the framerate seems smoother there than say the outskirts of Vegas. Not sure why either. I just wish the engine would make up it's mind and play at a decent clip for once.

I strolled around the entire map and the fps stayed capped at 60, Strip included where I get pretty terrible fps now.

Is there a chance that maybe your settings got screwed up (aka shadows were removed, view distance lowered, etc.) and they just weren't changed enough to note a visible difference? This is bugging me now too.

I don't think so, I didn't mess around in the the advanced graphics settings. All I did was click either high or ultra quality and change the AA&AF.

Besides, I've tried playing on low quality without any real difference. Some areas give me a bad fps no matter what it seems.
