The Order of the Lamp

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 3:02 am

I was finally getting around to reading some of the books in Oblivion when I found a reference to something that sounded cool...In the book - The Origins of the Mages Guild, there's a mention of a group created by...The chap who formed the Guild, called The Order of the Lamp, who were a security/military section of the Guild charged with protection of the various Mages as they ambled about...By the sounds of it anyways...Aaanyways, they seem to have disbanded or have generally been neglected by the Guild, and the "Master-at-arms" post seems to have been dropped...

I'm currently attempting to write some fan-fic and I was wondering if there was some Lore around about the Order, that hasn't been put on the Elder Scrolls Wiki?..I only ask as I had created (in the game) a character that was "Green Lantern of Tamriel"...Just because I thought the Glass armour was very cool for it...And I'm wondering about using him for when the new Archmage re-starts the order...Just so you know... ...

Cheers...

Damn. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything. Use http://www.imperial-library.info/ as another search engine for your Elder Scrolls needs. Its more reliable than the wiki.

I think you can pretty much do whatever you want with the Order of the Lamp. The only other document I found that mentions them at all was The Black Arts on Trial, and only peripherally. Although Oblivion probably isn't a good representation of the reality of things, it does seem that the Order was not prominent in Cyrodiil in 3E - however, it was still around, as it is mentioned that the Order in Orsinium failed to catch the necromancer magister when Traven took his post. I suppose the Guild didn't worry too much about its safety in the heart of the Empire. Maybe Mannimarco wouldn'ta swooped down on 'em if they'd maintained the Order.

If you're looking for something more to go on, you could read the Daggerfall descriptions of the Nine's knightly orders. Not really related, I know, but it might give you an idea what kind of flavor TES likes for this sort of society. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nine-divines-julianos

(Not my place, but please don't use the Green Lantern idea. Unless you're writing a parody.)

"Almost immediately after the Guild was formed, the question of security had to be addressed. The Isle of Artaeum did not require force of arms to shield it from invaders -- when the Psijic Order does not wish someone to land on the Isle, it and all its inhabitants simply become insubstantial. The new Mages Guild, by contrast, had to hire guards. Galerion soon discovered what the Tamrielan nobility has known for thousands of years: Money alone does not buy loyalty. The knightly Order of the Lamp was formed the following year."

Derp, must read op thoroughly in future.

*Applauds, bows down and then rises once more to embrace Dinmel in a brotherly embrace of thanks...*...

Also thanks to everyone else who replied but seriously, Dinmel, that link was brilliant...Knightly Orders a-go-go!!!...Don't often use a-go-go...Not going to again...Aaamywho...I got so many ideas from that site...Cheers soooo much... :goodjob: ...

Oh, and fear not...That Lantern idea was only for the game...Just an idea that came to me with all the Glass armour flying around...But once I got to thinking about the writing, I just thought it was cool that having done that to find a reference to an Order of the Lamp....Way too cool!...

Many thanks to you all...

Cheers, Rob...
