Good graphics card for this game?

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:19 am

Hi there. I'm looking for a decent graphics card that will be able to run Skyrim, Fallout 3, NV and Oblivion on HIGH settings with good fps...

I currently have a Radeon HD 5400, which is the worst piece of machinery on the planet.... and I'd like something better. Price range = £40 - £60($63.07 - $94.61), around that.

Specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
Processor: AMD Athlon™ II X4 645 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.1GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3584MB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series
Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x68E1)

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814141126&Tpk=radeon%20hd%205750

It's what I'm currently using, but it's one of the bigger cards. It seems to be working pretty well so far, and I didn't pay much for it.

I'm sure there is better for the price, however.

Not exactly sure where that falls on this list, but I would wait at least a week until the official PC requirements are released before spending money.

I would also recommend you check out this thread as they have a pretty compressive list of cards.

An HD 5400 should be able to run this game high/max with no problem.

Seen as it can't run Fallout 3, NV or Oblivion on the LOWEST settings without lagging... I doubt it.

Really? I've been maxing out those games on a Radeon HD 3870 with no problem. Are you sure it's the card that's the issue?

It is hard to say right now. The Oblivion/Fallout engine was seemingly limited by the CPU rather than gfx. I have a 5790 and it never clocked over 50% even when very heavily modded. I am going to wait until release and see how it does. Find out how well it scales on multi gpu systems, does it have HDR issues for multi gpu, is it CPU limited etc. I realise you want a system to play the game the instant it comes out, but really the best advise I could give you is wait a few days until ATI get their act together and release a working driver, then check the foums to see how each gfx card is coping.

The middle two numbers are what REALLY matters, when it comes to the Radeon HD #### series.

i got a 5770 for 70 buks on ebay

that has comparable stats to a 6770 for half the price
so sumthin like that may work, but id make sure the rest of your system is relatively up to date also
im not sure but id say u would want atleast a 2 core cpu, 4gb ram min

i got a computer like that for 500 buks new a couple months bak

tho i just got a 6 core, 12gb ram crossfire for 900 buks last week so...

i think theyre releasing min specs next week.

Before you do anything about your graphics card; You are aware of the fact that your 32-bit operating system can't use all that RAM you have there? Just wanted to point that out.

Anyway, that card could maybe max out Oblivion on a reasonable framerate but you won't have that much luck with Skyrim, I am afraid.

I used numerous different GPUs with the same computer with Fallout 3 and the only time I ever say an appreciable difference between them was with the Point Lookout DLC. Around the Turtledove Detention Center (with all its mist, dead trees and reflections in the water) my old 8800 GTX would slow to a crawl on max in game graphics settings. The current GTX 560 can easily handle it.

It seems anything from a good medium card on up has smooth gameplay in Oblivion and Fallout3/NV. You really have to play at a high resolution to separate them from a top of the line GPU. That points to a heavy CPU load for the games and if Skyrim is similar buying the uber card for 1920x1080 might not be necessary. I plan on installing the game, trying it out and if the GTX 560 can't max it (at 1680x1050) then I'll get something better. I have a feeling it can though.

Only Radeon 5750/5770 comes to mind in that price range.

You mean AMD? Of course they are. I've had AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs for years.

Wait, they make complete PCs? Wasn't avare of that.

Actually, any card should fit into your PC. (But I wouldn't go with Nvidia, ATI rocks)

You should get a nVidia GTX 460. It can max almost anything (2xaa) without OC'ing , Skyrim included. It's a card that sells itself at the price of 150$, considering that it's performance is almost the same as the GTX 470 (that is priced at 250$)
