Not sure if this can even be answer at this point but I ask either way. I Know you can change and equipped weapons and armors to your Mercenaries/Hirelings and have them travel with you. But can you do the same with your Wife or Husband in game? Like can I give my wife a sword and armor and have her Slay Dragons and explore caves with me as well? If so I want a Bad*** wife let me tell you .??? What do you guys think?
I'm positive they'll be able to wear armour and have weapons. Going back to Oblivion... If you went into an inn or tavern there would be people with armour on like iron, steel, and fur. Todd said you can bring your spouse on quests with you (basically your companion). So yes, I'm positive you can, but if you mean that you give them a weapon or piece of armour and put it on I don't know.
If your wife is like most companions she'll probably make up her own mind, by picking from amongst the crap you've given her to carry. Sad but true - you can pick out a nice Mithril Helmet for her... but the moment you hand her a a Daedric Helm of Ghastliness the damm thing will be on her head.
MY WIFE WONT LOOK LIKE MY CURRENT GIRLFRIEND.... GUESS WHAT THAT MEANS..
It means you'll have more time to play Skyrim if she ever sees that
Seriously though I like the OP's question and am curious as well. Also can you have more than one spouse? I am mainly curious in this from a modding perspective since I am wondering if souses are handled like normal companions. Companions tend to be among the most popular mods and this adds an all new level.
It'd be sick if your wife could play similar to a companion. That'd be fun to do like a Bonny and Clyde thief style thing. Equip her with some good chameleon armor and go around breaking in and stealing rare artifacts.
Speaking of rare artifacts, hopefully our houses have display cases and armor racks to be able to place objects we've collected through our explorations.
Its a really difficult to answer question, but this time there will be a lot of companions. The reason could be that you can have as a companion any NPC you can marry with (maybe only after the weeding).

Also having your wife/husband adventuring with you would add more of an effort in protecting your companion and not letting them die like some random person.
I hope it's possible. Me and my in-game wife would be slaying dragons left and right in our Elven Armor, Glass Swords, and Destruction Magic.
Psh, I'm just keeping in with the Nordic theme. Could you imagine what the guys at the tavern would say if my wife accompanied me on my dangerous adventures?!
