Steam denies activation of UK retail versions outside UK ?

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 10:53 am

I like to know if I buy a retail version of Skyrim from a U.K website, let's say, in amazon.uk.co, and if I'm from outside UK (Western Europe), I can still activate my copy of Skyrim in Steam (or not).

Thanks.

Square Enix attempted this with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, region locking the UK version to the UK only and announcing that only weeks before release. Just before release they changed their minds though, because of all the angry people and probably because their lawyers told them the EU wouldn't like it. :P

I'm not expecting Skyrim to be region locked. If it was, they'd probably have announced that by now. I ordered from amazon.co.uk as well and I'm from The Netherlands. I've ordered other Steam games from there before and there never were any issues.

Why not just use the domain of where you are?

Pff, just use a proxy or something and make steam believe you are in the UK problem solved (if its not allowed to post workarounds just tell me)

Can you PM me with links describing how to do that, if I ever need it, please? Many thanks.

I figure you'll be able to. No reason to not allow it. I mean if you prefer spending a different currency than your own (then paying the exchange fee) go for it :D.

Ive never had to use it myself, but a simple google or glance at some of the game subforums on the steam forums have explanations of how to do it with links to programs etc.

Also why @Steam would region block UK copy activation in non UK country, some places have retailers who get exclusive selling rights to said game, has been done before, in which case Steam is not allowed to activate copies from a country, in a country where a retailer like gamestop have exclusivity.

I forgot which game but last year or something there was alot of angry people on the steam forums because a certain game was not being sold on steam, only in retailers in the UK I think it was.

Why is this important?

Honest question, is the UK version different in some regard?

The problem is that here the retail version of the game will cost (probably) 49,90 euros. In websites from UK, costs 31,82 euros (without the exchance fee, yes)...

Bypassing regional protection might get your steam account disabled indefinitely, which means every game on it is busted forever. Good luck with that.

Because if someone moves to a different country Steam would totally ban their entire account /sarcasm, not gonna happen.

Why is this important?

Bad translations? Poor voice acting? Foreign nationals living in a country whose language they are not fluent in? There are many possibilities...

+ EU gamers sometimes purchase games from the UK because its generally cheaper and also German gamers sometimes get UK versions to avoid the censoring.

Steam account ban is a worst case scenario. This might happen as well: [http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3505/steamregionallimitation.png]. Bypassing that by VPN, proxy or whatever might add a ban on top of it.

It's much cheaper than all other EU versions mostly.

PC version in UK is roughly 30-35% cheaper that where I'm from.

EDIT: grammar.

I don't have twitter to ask this to Mr. Pete Hines, there is a way to get an official response from BS about my doubt?

I mean, missing three and a half weeks to day 1 for Skyrim and since the game requires steamworks, players should know this information in advance to decide if they will pre-order & buy or not the game from other country... :(

Don't hold your breath for it. They have some super duper important legal reasons (#Air quotes#) to ignore this kind of questions. Believe me, I've been waiting for any answer for 30+ days and still nothing.
