How has your gameplay style changed from pre to post release

Post » Sat Sep 12, 2009 4:52 am

Well, im sure that before the game was released we all had a general idea of how we were going to play with our classes, weapons and body types. so how have what you planned and what your actually doing changed?

Well, my first idea was to be a light soldier who would soly scout out, focus on meds, and play general firing support. but i barely even do that any more(except for supplying teammates with ammo)

Now, i play a very versatile and situational adaptive soldier. instead of being light, im now medium and instead of just using my Carb-9 and caesar revolver, i use a light rifle and Carb-9 to quickly switch between long range support, and front lines support. satchel charges help with long range support too, throw one out, go hide, wait, BOOM!

even though im sniping, i like that theres no headshots :P

I expected not to touch Soldiers in any serious way, and I've got several of their abilities on my main, and am planning a heavily Soldier-focused second character who I'll be using a lot as well.

Pretty sure that's a large change from my expectations.

Also, I was planning on strictly sticking to being dual-spec, and I've instead added those Soldier abilities to make me quite a well-rounded triple-spec character.

Hmmm... i guess a lot changed for me. My medium strictly-to-be-engineer deviated towards Engineer/Soldier dual spec, while my light Operative got additional medical training. Working on additional all-round character right now, and it seems fine too ^^

I've switched from an SMG wielding Medic to an SMG wielding Engineer/Operative.

Medic burns through supplies a bit too fast, an extra supply pip or 2 should come packaged with the standard kit or as a Rank 1 ability.

I was doing exactly what I assumed I would be doing from pre release till I gave up because it crashes too much.

I began playing the game with a Medium Soldier/Medic based character, playing it like a regular FPS.
Now I'm mainly using a Heavy Engineer and focusing only on those Abilities.
This is excellent for defending objectives using the turrets and a heavy machine gun.
After playing the game a few times, you really start to appreciate the importance of each class' role.
I think the next character I make is going to be a pure Operative. I've heard good things after you unlock better Abilities.

I was determined to be a Medium Soldier full of explosives, now I'm a Light Operative with a Sniper Rifle.

I have been surprised by how strongly I have become "attached" to the role of Medic.

I was planning all of these combinations of characters, but now every current and planned character will have at least three Medic abilities. And my first character to Level 20 was a pure-Medic, with all Medic abilities.

I started playing it as if it was CoD. That didn't work, so I tried a more tf2 approach. Better, but still no. So I took some time away from multiplayer to learn maps vs bots and to figure out my role. Came back to multiplayer to find bots were just better than players in almost every way. I have one character for each class - my Engineer hit 20, my other characters are between 10 and 15. I'm really digging all of them. I'm not necessarily attached to one role, I enjoy all the classes and play them very differently.

My Engineer runs light body, Drognav with Greeneye (COGA) scope, and a Hockler (Belgo) for getting up close. The idea is set turrets and mines on chokepoints and either support them, or use them as early warnings so I know when to run off.

My Medic runs medium body, with a Lobster GL and a Drognav with Greeneye scope. The Lobster buys me time to pick up my buddies off the ground, and my Drognav is for actual combat since it's effective at most ranges.

My Soldier runs medium body, with the Gerund AR with drums, underslung GL, YeoTek Red Dot, and a muzzle brake, with a Carb-9 secondary. The extra magazine is a lifesaver with the Drum, it means I can hold a max of 120 bullets, exactly 2 drums worth. I usually don't reload until I have to, and for that I just change guns. Underslung GL is about the most broken thing I've seen in the game so far.

My Operative runs light body with a Carb-9 main and a Sea Eagle secondary. It plays about how you would expect an Operative to - pick off stragglers, give radar out like candy, support the team by spotting mines and painting objective classes, and when all else fails slide tackle into a crowd and book it.

My style has evolved a lot over time. Primarily, as a soldier, I try to protect hacks and repairs as much as I can, as I now know what a pain in the [censored] they are to complete. I buff more often and have got over my aversion for camping on defence. I have completely abandoned shotties and the pistol/knife combo, as the baddie bots are hideously buffed. I now multi-class my characters as soldier/engineer to make me more useful. Lastly, as K/D doesn't matter and isn't displayed, I'll happily sacrifice myself for the objective, buying an Op more time, or moving a bot along under fire. This game is so much more my speed than other FPS - I'll not play a game focused on K/D again.

When I've got this guy to level 20, I'm toying with Light/Op/Sniper, having never tried that combo - advice welcomed.

I really, really feel you on that K/D comment. I used to play like CoD and Halo and think, I did more for my team than anyone else, I did all the hard work, and it's just not reflected in the stats since it only cares about how many kills I got. Now I really feel my score at the end reflects how much I put toward the team. It's fantastic.

I started out as a medium engineer and have since started a light op. I am enjoying the advantages of getting to the high up spaces.

Started hip-firing more, I tried playing MAG the other night and died a few times because I forgot it's not so effective... but I've also learned to be a lot harsher on myself with burst-firing.

It's amusing, I am the opposite, I know I out frag 90% of people I play. I'll hold off 3/4 players from an objective at a time for a long, long time by myself and this gets no recognition.
The idea that that isn't important cracks me up so much, throw out those buffs and die guys, you're the real team players *roll eyes.

Some [censored] had a cry because I didn't get him up when he was downed behind me (I didn't see him go down, otherwise I would have.) and made a crack about kill[censored] medics.
I had previously fragged at least 25+ people attempting to get to the gate and had fragged 3 people actually planting on it. What was the soldier who made the crack doing at this time?
Damned knows but apparently what I was doing was wrong.
