How can Skyrim look this good?

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 4:40 pm

It actually looks pretty average by most game standards at this point.

The amazing thing is that it looks average with so much damn content and great gameplay. There's more to Bethesda games than any other developer, but Bethesda still has pretty good graphics in their games. That's what's impressive, not the graphics themselves.

I refuse to buy any game thats a single player game, that requires an internet connection, which is why I bought a PS3 and am getting Skyrim for it.

But as far as the looks of Skyrim, they are amazing, I thought the graphics on Oblivion were amazing considering when it came out. Fallout 3 wasn't much a step up from Oblivion, but i think its looks helped with the atmostphere of it.

While I personally consider the PC to be better than consoles in almost every way, I find the phrase "objective reason one could prefer" to be amusing.

Why?

One can have a subjective preference, such as just liking how shiny the Xbox 360 casing is. Or an objective preference, such as the PC having superior specs.

Edit- ...fine, I have to concede that my point was poorly worded, but still true.

Seeing how Oblivion was one of the first games for the now current gen consoles, the graphics where truly amazing at the time. However, 5 years have passed and while FO3 and FO:NV didn't really improve graphics, it comes as no surprise that for Skyrim they did improve graphics from a 5 year old game. It's just common sense.
Now Skyrim isn't the best looking game on the 360 (or PS3) by far, but seeing how you have this huge condensed world open for you, the graphics are quite impressive. After all, it's a lot easier to have good graphics for relatively small levels than for a big open world.

But why discuss it anyway? Gameplay is far more important than graphics. Especially for games like this.

Still some old problems rearing their ugly heads though, such as the grass popping in 20 ft in front of you.

BF3 is another game that looks ridiculously good, but the gameplay suffers from it. Don't think skyrim will have that issue, but adding in breeze effects and "wash" from a fireball explosion would be heaven.

Well BF3's gameplay is actually quite good. The beta had many bugs, but they stated that they have already fixed all those annoyances.

Still though, Skyrim is going to crap on BF3 as soon as it comes out. :]

The threads ment to be about skyrim graphics looking good, not top of the range or photo realistic, but good. Which I agree with. Could we have a little less console bashing and pc reach arounds please, face it ppl ate happy with there crappy old xbox because it was cheap you put the disc in hay presto 'no' nonsense. Stating the obvious over and over is just annoying to read what ever platform you are going to play on.

Some shots are on the PC. That's how. Not all are on the 360.

This for instance. http://www.elderscrolls.com/skyrim/media/screenshots/draugr-crypt/

No way that is 360. I should know. I play both 360 and PC. Does not look the same as the 360 shots either.

Its not "That" good but it certainly is good, a huge improvement over the last elder scrolls and fallout game for sure. But its not a graphical powerhouse or anything, its still missing a lot of effects like god rays, depth of field and motion blur.

How did they even manage to make it look like this?

Beware, spoiler ahead! Secrets on how they made Skyrim so [censored] awesome.
Spoiler
They found the shroud of turin, thor's hammer, robin hoods bow, excaliber and some bacteria from the sweaty back of chuck norris. Placed them all in a petri dish with a copy of the Prose Edda, LOTR and the previous TES games and waited to see what happened!
