Question about classes and leveling.

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:59 pm

I started out oblivion recently basically as knight. I was going for a heavily armored very strong knight. I just restarted an decided to go with magic. Is it just me or is magic a ton more interesting and fun? Also later in the game can become more of a magic guy with my knight character or am I stuck with this brute.

I just can't get over how much fun I was having with magic. I never go that route in any game. Basically what I'm asking is down the road no matter what you've chosen can you change it by leveling up and just by doing things in the game?

Last question. What exactly is a battlemage? In the end I want a character that has decent armor, who is human and can do some decent magic stuff. For instance how do I acquire the spells that always stay with you?

Leveling strategies are better shown and explained http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Leveling. At least better than I could explain them.

You aren't limited to one type of character. ANY character can become specialized in other areas, at any point in the game. Simply by doing. However, a character that starts with the right Birthsign, Race and what have you. Will fair better, for that given playstyle.

And yes...Mages are very fun. They are actually some what overpowered. If you need strength...cast a spell. If you want to raise a Skill...cast a spell. If you need Armor, Weapons, open a lock, charm, command or kill...cast a spell. If you want to be sneaky and illusive...cast a spell. Being a pure mage, gives you an easy access to being anything you want to be.

You can raise minor skills up to and beyond the level of your major skills. It doesnt matter. All that matters is that only major skills will contribute to a level up, but theres nothing stopping you from raising a minor to 100.

A Battlemage is just a Mage that specializes in Destruction, which is "battle" magic. Its hinted in the name. Destruction is the most offensive school of magic and is used in battle, so naturally a Battlemage would focus on Destruction more than any other school. They dont always wear armor, however.

Contrary to what people think, A Battlemage isnt a "melee/magic" hybrid like for example a Spellsword. A Battlemage would likely only use a weapon in close quarters. They are primarily a magic class. The "Battle" part in their name just hints towards the fact that they are a mage thats skilled in "battle magic", or in other words, Destruction.
