UK-version, steam, languages

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 7:55 am

Hey guys,

I've got some questions concerning the UK version of Skyrim for PC.

I live in Germany and I want to pre-order the game from amazon.co.uk,
because it's much cheaper there compared with german prices (e.g. on amazon.de).

So, my questions are:
Can I activate the Uk-version here in Germany? (I don't know how steam's dealing with it...)
Does the Uk-version include german language? Or, if not, can i sort of download it via steam?

Greetings an thanks in advance =)

You should download it from Steam if they do. They should have a German version.

Also, I did hear somewhere that the game is region locked, but I'm not sure.

I live in Germany too and afaik Pete Hines recently said that the German console versions of Skyrim will have German texts and voices only, which lets me assume it's the same and vice versa with the UK PC version (no German texts/voices)

I read to there and thought "Oh lawd here we go....."

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure Steam locks it to your region, and the German version always demands German language. There's been a couple news stories I've read (think on IGN?) confirming that the German version will definitely lock it and only allow for the German language.
When I bought Fallout New Vegas, I bought a CD for it, but the CD didn't install a darn; all it did was let Steam know that I DO have a copy and then it downloaded it for me. I do have the option to play Fallout New Vegas in any language I want, but if I actually try to attempt to change the language, it'll download that language like normal, but attempting to start up the game will result in "This game is currently unavailable." If you get the game from a foreign country and attempt to install it, I'm not sure if Steam would automatically give you the German version anyways or not. Depends on how Steam works, though I do think I've run into some Germans who always buy from another country for that very reason.

The UK version however SHOULD allow German as the language; the limitation preventing German copies from playing in a different language is exclusive to the German version because Germany likes to censor our games a tad.

The German Skyrim is uncut. Regional locks are mostly the result of political reasons, like one retailer wanting exclusive rights.

Pete confirmed that the German edition is German only, but he *believes* one can switch the language via steam. If so, it should be possible to switch the UK version to German, too. Steam lists Skyrim only once, available for all languages (as opposed to having a unique entry for each language)

Ok, so there's nothing officially confirmed about region-locking yet?

The only confirmed locked countries are the countries of the CIS.

I seem to remember a couple of people from Poland indicated they couldn't buy it from Steam either.

It would be great to hear somethign official. I dont wanna play skyrim in german and if the german version is strictly "german" AGAIN i have to import it from teh UK. I have no idea if that regionlock stuff is true. But if it is, it would svck major donkey balls. Investing 2 hours to change the language of New Vegas because Steam wont let me the normal way is just NOT FUN.

Apparently nobody can reply because of, let me quote: "Super duper legal reasons". That's what I've been told for the past month. :ermm:

What is strange is that the game will be released in 24 days from now, it is confirmed it will use Steamworks and ... that's it... :(

There is no official statement from Bethesda Softworks to explain if there are regional restrictions or not! What a strange way to deal with consumers who want to buy their games.

I also have the same dilemma, I want to buy 2 copies for PC (1 for me and 1 to offer to my brother) from amazon.co.uk ...

In my country the game will cost 50 €, in the UK website costs 33 € .

I want to save almost 35 euros to help me buy in the future the DLC's.

But I cannot even pre-order because I don't know if the steam will block my ORIGINAL COPY or not, just because is from another country...

It's not just about saving money most of the time. It's a personal preference of the original version over a butchered localised one. There are a lot of phrases, jokes and idioms that just don't translate well into other languages.

dAb and I rewrote the preliminary Steam FAQ pinned in this forum and submitted it to GStaff for approval. He's going to validate all the new info on it before it gets posted. One of the entries concerns region-locking.

So, unless that entry is purged, accurate info regarding it should be in the pinned Steam FAQ within a few days (check the last update date to the right of it...)

The problem for us is (I'm German too), that right now there are several preorder offers on the way, like soundtrack+map+game at the german amazon shop. I preordered there, because of the CD and I know, that the game arrives in time then. But I want to play in english (because of the syncro and later many mods come along in english so theres no mixed up stuff then when I got the game installed in english) and there was never any problem with that with any of my steam games. Now there are serveral opportunities:

1. we can buy the game anywhere in Europe or elswhere and we're able to install it in English...best one for all!

2. if we buy a copy in germany we can't change the language to english...that would be terrible...but we could use a U.K./U.S. copy

3. there is ja "real" regionlock, so that we're not only able to install the german/french/whatever copies in english, we would not even be able to import a copy from the U.K. or elswhere to get the game in english...

3. would be a "then i'm not gonna buy it" argument :(
