Will PC get better textures?

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 9:10 am

Hey, so after looking at this http://i.imgur.com/gjQsA.jpg you sure want to agree that the textures in this screenshot are subpar, probably because its a console screen (you can tell by looking at the jaggies)
This comes off as being elitist, but I know that the PC can handle bigger, better textures. Im not being elitist, this is a fact. if you dont like that fact, go away and dont yell at me.

Anyways, was there any mention of textures being different on the PC?

Yes, they said the PC version will get much better texture options. Even if they don't challenge your computer, there are always mods. ^^

Any source? Not that I dont believe you, I just want to know what he said.

And yeah mods are a thing, they normally dont have texturepacks until 1 or 2 months after release.

I would imagine the texture resolution on consoles is lowered on "non-essential" textures but they could be the same on PC. Oblivion did the same thing and Qarl's fixed that so I have faith in it being fixed, whether high res textures come with the game or the talented modders in the community take care of it.

No problem, I'll be looking to take advantage of my computer too. Luckily we can also look forward to the user created texture packs that will eventually come out that will upgrade everything.

While I made a thread, did he also ever say something about the ugly grassdistance? Its very noticable here: http://i.imgur.com/zZ6U5.jpg

You know, grass suddenly disappearing and you only see the bald ground texture. Its really ugly.

That grass render distance looks quite a bit shorter than Oblivion's grass distance on PC, so I guess it'll be longer on the PC version of Skyrim as well.

9) Can we have some specifics about the PC version of the game? How will it's UI be different? Will there be a 64-bit executable?
Todd: 64-bit specific exe? Not at this time. As far as UI, it visually looks the same across the platforms, but the controls are entirely different. There’s also a lot of “power user” stuff we do with the keyboard from how favorites work, to quick saves, and more that is similar to what we’ve done before in that area. We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion. The PC version also gets higher res textures, larger render modes, and a bunch of other effects you can scale up if your machine is a beast. Last but most important, is the Creation Kit we’ll be releasing for the PC. Modding the game and making it your own is very important to us and our fans, so we’re going to keep doing whatever we can in that area.

Funny how eye catching that portion of the wall is in the sides of the screen when there's a big Draugh in the middle bearing high-res textures...

I don't think thats high-res, it has a lot of AA still compared to others, but not nearly as much as other screens,so that tells me medium settings and by extension i'm guessing resolution as well.

Draw distances are adjustable on the PC version. It is doubtless that the grass will be tweakable, as it was in Oblivion AND Fallout 3.

I would believe they let the game load for making a screenshot.

Please dont post if you dont know what youre talking about.

1. High-res describes the textures.
2. consoles dont have AA
3. console graphics are not tweakable.

1. I was guessing based on the AA i saw, its called scaling. You do not have AAx2 and 2400x2000 resolutions if you have a crappy PC, so what do you do? You scale back the settings. I think i made that pretty clear during my post.
2. I never mentioned consoles, but while i can't speak for the PS3- i know the 360 does have anti-aliasing capabilities.
3. I never said they had been.

So i suggest you drop the attitude.

Oh, you mean aliasing. Protip: aa means anti-aliasing. aa makes jaggies go away.
Only some games come with anti aliasing, Skyrim is (as you can tell from the 360 screens we got) is not one of them.

If you want me to understand you properly, dont call aliasing anti-aliasing. Thats like calling small big.

Well, lots of grass different looking tall grass, as out in the wilderness, is very taxing for a system to draw.
As computers get more and more powerful, this can of course be scaled up to show grass farther away, but
I think most of the extra power that comes with newer hardware, are instead used to make the immediate
area and lighting look much better. It's a prioritization decision. Maybe one day we can have games where
you can look far into the distance with powerful binoculars, and every little detail is just a crisp as what's
around you where you stand. However, that day, is not today, nor 11.11.11..
