Concerning Reviews and Radiant Story.

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:57 am

It's come to my attention that a large amount of reviews consist of the same sidequests and/or dungeons. The only difference is that each review puts its own spin on it, though, when it comes down to it, it's all the same. When I read that they headed up to the largest mountain they saw, I usually started to stop reading further. It's become slightly disconcerting to hear that the Radiant Story is supposed to present a unique experience to each player, but in all the reviews its the same dungeon and the same quests. So, where's the variant?

Also, it's come to my wonderment whether the Radiant Story can be affected by cheating. Like say for example in Oblivion, when a companion died. Like one of those soldiers who fought beside you during the opening of the gates. I had this thing where I didn't want any deaths, so I'd either quickly restart their health using the console command, thanks to being on PC, or just simply resurrecting them. So, if Radiant Story factors all of this information, and replaces the brother you killed with his sister who wants revenge, what happens if you resurrect the brother before even seeing her existence? Will this screw up my game?

I agree, i was just reading the other preview hands on in another thread, and there was only one that didnt revolve around riverwood, and this sodding golden claw. Well it did bt he did other things too, found a cave with some sort of backstory concerning a necromancer and such.

Duh? All the reviews are from the main quest where you get a dragon shout right? Usually with mention of one side quest that seems to require that you deliver one item. What did you think radiant story was going to do? Relocate the dragon shout walls? Nah. Also it's sad that you're already making up bugs. The game isn't out yet, any bug you think of is pure speculation and therefor pointless.

I'm not making up anything. I'm just concerned it might affect the Radiant Story, because usually when a game logs someone as dead, they're well, dead.

I've read plenty of previews today that had nothing to do with Bleak Falls. The reason they all go to Riverwood is because it is along the road that they start on. Also, your complaint about how radiant story isn't really relevant. All of the previewers have not cleared any dungeons going into the demo, so radiant story doesn't have to change the default location for the quest. It's also possible that that particular quest is not affected by radiant story.

Well, don't cheat yourself for starters and you don't have to worry about quest conflict bugs. Course restarting is fine and shouldn't mess anything up. With all the save points and auto save points it really shouldn't be a problem.

No matter what anyone does, Radiant Story can always be broken, especially if you try to do it. However, I do believe that what we have with Skyrim is much better than what we had in any previous TES game, so I'm not going to complain until I can tell by playing it that it's broken.

The way I play this hasn't been much of a problem. I do recall having no pity on those who would come to this forum when playing MW and cry "Help I killed so-n-so and now I can't finish quest X", to which I always replied "Why the heck did you kill so-n-so? Serves you right.". Sorry, I don't give much pity to fools.

Pretty much this.

And as for your second statement, there is one simple answer don't cheat. Yes I can see cheating easily breaking Radiant Story personally. That doesn't mean Radiant Story is bugged or broken it means that is not the intended way for it to function.

They were 30 minutes to 1 hour in the game.....don't really think the radiant system had anything to go on by that point.

OP, most of the official previewers from gaming sites did the same thing that was shown in the Skyrim Video Preview. It's only logical that Radiant Story turns out the same in the walkthroughs that are the same, especially because the players didn't really have the time to influence the quests/world in any major way.

I always assumed the main quest-line wouldn't be changing dramatically from person to person, especially at the very beginning. We're all likely going to be introduced into the world in the same way, near the same starting towns and dungeons. Radiant story likely fleshes out more once you're a higher-level and more of the world is readily accessible to you.

About that i am pretty sure the system will have like 48 hrs time to see what he is gona do, for example if a shopkeeper dies the system will not immediately spawn a fictional brother and sister that the shopkeeper had so one of them can replace him it will w8 a bit probably 2 days time so if you want to res him i am pretty sure it will work.

Bleak Falls Barrow is connected to the main quest. There's an achievement you get for going through it.

What's interesting to note is that most people got the quest in Riverwood, whereas one journalist got it in Falkreath.

I actually think that it's a typo (Maybe not) because he even made references to Riverwood NPCs (Like Sven, from the "Lover's Letter Quest")

In-Topic: Every quest that the Hands-On Journalist got were exactly the type of Quest that Radiant Story don't cover because they need to follow a strictly script. (The Golden-Claw will ALWAYS be in Bleak Falls Barrow...)

Probably is a typo then. Point being, Bleak Falls Barrow is related to the main plot and thus is a hand-crafted quest, not a Radiant Story-constructed one.

The previewers have just been trying to follow the main quest line a little. But there have been a number who went off the beaten path, including one who mentioned getting somewhere that Todd didn't think they could have in the given time.

Also, I really, really, really, really, really hate people making stupid points about the effect console cheats might have on the game. The console wasn't created to facilitate cheating. It's a development tool.

The first quest in the main quest had no variance? This is old news, and expected by everyone who knows what radiant quests will do.

Scripted quests are scripted quests and won't change much.

PCG UK's Tom Francis went to Riften instead.
Pretty interesting Radiant Story things happened in his write up.
Not one of them involved Bleak Fall Barrows.

They said it themselves, that they won't use the Radiant Story everywhere, only in places where it would make sense.

That claw is a part of that dungeon, so it's obvious that the dungeon is going to be static.

Also this is one of the quests from the frist town you'll probably see, just like your first dungeon was probably Vilverin in Oblivion, or Addamasartus in Morrowind.

also it also radiant story starts making more real changes the more it learns about you. like an accomplished mage being challenged to duel or a trainee swordsman asking for you to make him look good to the crowds.

You seem to think Radiant Story makes everything in the world dynamic, the reason you think that is probably due to all the hype over it.But that's not what it does, it pays attention to where you've been, what skills you've used, and what you've done and it alters quests based on the way you've played. It does not, however dynamically generate everything within every quest you do, it has to have something to build upon first.Radiant Story does not generate random quests, Radiant Story dynamically alters certain elements of quests based on what you've done.

I'm a little confused about the beginning of your rant (and will completely ignore the second half which is pointless if you're going to try and cheat the game in a way not intended), did you expect Radiant Story to change the quests we all receive from areas instead of the person giving the game quest? I'm pretty sure if we all followed the same route in the game without killing anything we didn't have to, we'd all have the exact same experience. We'd get our quests from the same people, go to the same places, kill the same things.

However, when has ANYBODY ever done that in a Bethesda game. Ever. We all take our own paths, do our own stuff, might kill some NPCs for various reasons even if they're a minor quest giver that we didn't know about, etc.

In short, I wouldn't worry too much about it. They were given three hours to explore, and their company expects them to come out with solid information on the game and not just "I walked around aimlessly for three hours and found some new trees". IGN broke that cycle, but it is extremely rare for that to happen.
