clarify for me if you can

 hi guys

there's a great thread{ new hands on previews } with some new 2 hours hands-on. i loved reading it but stayed away
from the heavy spoiler parts.

my heart literally sank when i read something to the fashion of "the map was quite small...."
the reviewer goes on to say that he/she covered only a little part making it sound like a
big {no pun intended} contradiction.
right now my mind is all over the place. why would someone say that and then make a statement saying
well, i only did a small bit when they just said the map { game world was small }. this right here is my
biggest fear.

i just want to know your opinion on this. what would you think when you hear this. the reviewer has
confused me....BIG TIME.

do you think it'll be "small". i know what Todd, Pete and the reast of the Bethy team has said regarding
map size but the question still stands, what the hell did this particular reviewer mean ? ?

basically, i just want to know what you make of this statement ?
i don't know how to post links i'm affraid so sorry in advance for not providing the review link.

There's a huge difference between the map and actual distance. From seeing the map on playthrough, it does look smaller than other TES maps, simply because it allows you to view everything at once, whereas in Oblivion or even Morrowind, you had to scroll all over to see everything.

I much prefer seeing the entire map, even if it makes everything 'feel' small. I hated scrolling around on Oblivion's map. I like to see everything laid out for me. :D

The author said he takes back his statement of the "map being small" after he realized how little ground he covered in the 2 hours.

He said it felt small for him when he ran from X to Y. He thought it would take longer to do that distance than it did, and so he thought the world was small. However, after seeing the distance he actually travelled from viewing the world map, he realised how big the world really is.

Skyrim is roughly the same size as Oblivion, so don't worry.

If somebody said this from playing one of them '2/3 Hour preview' things, you do know they are limited to where they're allowed to go, right? As far as my knowledge is correct (And I'm sorry if its wrong) If somebody was to wander off, depending on where, somebody would inform the person playing not to go there. So, the person who said the map was small, might have been talking about the playable area being small?

Nope just that the actual map is small.

In one article the reviewer walked from Riverwood to Winterhold and basically avoided fights and stated that he took him 1 and a half hours (real-time) to get there.

That's a LOOOONG walk.

Most previews are barely scratching the surface of the sheer size of Skyrim.

I took it to mean that certain parts are clouded over and reveal as you walk around more did I read more into it than everyone else?

 We all have read several reviews and most said the world is big. This thread reminds me of a story of 100 people saying the sky is blue but 1 person says the sky is red...so now the OP thinks the sky is red

thanks to everyone.

i just hope they haven't made skyrim small. where i travel for a while meet the boundaries "you cannot go in
that direction" way to fast. this games seems to good to be true. god really hope it feels massive and
truely "about the same size of Oblivion".

Skyrim is roughly the same size as Oblivion, so don't worry.

Well, not really. We have pictures of the skyrim and the oblivion map on the net - out of interest, I scaled the two together in paint.net along the Skyrim/cyrodiil common border (that way I know there is a reasonably close 1:1 correspondence in scale), and the Skyrim land area seems to be... Well, about 75% the size of oblivion's. Another thing, Cyrodiil is kind of hook-shaped, so a lot of distances are longer than direct-straight lines, whereas Skyrim seems to be very rounded - that could mean that most paths in the large scale are relatively straight (Doesn't look like any mountain range is as big as the bulge of Elsweyr on, say, anvil-bruma path).

So, myeah. I know that Skyrim probably has a lot of caves and dungeons, but, well, oblivion had them too :) And that's my main worry about Skyrim, to be honest, I feel like the game world just won't be as large as it's hyping up to be.

P.S. I won't upload the pics anywhere, as I'm not sure if it's allowed. But it's dead easy to find the two maps and scale them so that they 'fit' to each other, so you can just DIY.

Also, isn't most of the map concealed by 'fog' at the beginning? At least until you uncover more areas (correct me if I'm wrong).

:spotted owl: hopefully this s the case, i hope they are not hyping it up too much you know.
alarm bells did ring when they said "about the same size as Oblivion". i guess we'll just have
to wait and see. i'd like to feel lost as i did in parts of Oblivion. that feeling of "gosh that's a long journey".

bethy have confirmed that.
