I despised all the worst things about Oblivion as much as any other disgruntled Elder Scrolls fan, have gotten to know the lore, educated others about it, debated theories, expressed displeasure about all of the game's flaws, lamented the lack of spears and crossbows and throwing weapons in Skyrim, the corner-cutting on certain skills, etc. and so forth, and my opinion is this:

Yes, they do look that [censored] cool. I honestly cannot think of a game that makes dragons look better than this in terms of how they look, sound, animate, and interact with the things around them. Experiencing them firsthand will tell if there is anything lacking about them or if there's something we have to experience to get a true grip on things, but from what we've seen they look amazing. As for the lore: Michael Kirkbride has given Skyrim's lore his thumbs-up. That's good enough for me.

I didn't despise Oblivion. What made you think so? I love it. I've got problems with all of the games.

Poor wording on my part... I think they look cool in that I've literally never seen better functioning dragons in a video game, before (surprising... given Bethesda could never really animate well). However, they're just one creature and so, in response to the tone of this thread which seems as though it treats dragons as a panacea, I don't think this one well-designed creature makes up for any shortcomings. It's cool... but not something I'll enjoy so much I can't get enough of them, or anything. Again, they're just one creature and I want the game for an open-ended RPG experience, not for dragons. They're cool and very well done... but not so cool as to mean anything regards to curbing shortcomings and disappointments. It's not like I'll be fighting them for 20 hours straight in sheer ecstasy. I'll fight them a bit, observe them, admire them, and enjoy the moment of being in a Scandinavian epic... but I would never purchase or praise a game just on dragons. Of all the time I'll be playing Skyrim, fighting dragons probably won't even amount to 5% of what I'm doing. Again, they're one creature and I'm not looking forward that much to this one thing... and that is what I'm trying to convey in response to this thread. As for MK... I've heard that rumor, but I had no idea if it was really true or if he was specifically writing the dragon lore or not. I believe it's only natural that he would, given he wrote the Seven Fights of Aldudagga, but either way, that has no bearing on my excitement for just fighting the flying reptiles.

I actually don't really care about the dragons that much. Dragons are pretty cliche in my book, they look great in this game, and I'm sure they'll be fun to fight, but I have a lot of other things I'm looking forward to a lot more.

Cmon guys how cool is it that we have an elder scrolls game with DRAGONS!!

With all the gripes about how it doesnt have this or that wouldn't be better to look on the brighter side.

The Kick-ass Dragon side.

You will always have someone who complains about this or that, just nature. And the good thing is all their belly-aching doesn't change the game.

DLC

Hoping, and praying...

They probably need it for DLC, as the possibilities of new playing styles, questlines, etc. are so vast that it's the perfect marketing scheme that we werewolf fans will so happily purchase.

Dragons are nice, but mostly incidental to my style of play.

Hunting Giant dragons that seem extremely real. I don't know what would be better.

This is pretty much my thoughts as well.

Every time I hear about how they spent "two whole years" to get them just right I can't help, but wonder how that time might have been better spent incorporating greater character options in terms of skills, equipment, quests. A single creature, no matter how unique it might be, just can't outweigh what I see as a major missed opportunity.

I find it really amusing how, throughout the years everyone has been complaining there are no dragons in TES. Now that there are, every one is like "Oh, dragons are not that interesting, my character wont even fight them".

Whatever.

Seti18, thats a pretty silly assumption. You assume that if they had spent those 2 years working on something else rather than dragons (which assumes the same people work in everything, which is, in my opinion, and with all due respect, a little naive on your part), there would have been more skills, or maybe spears or whatever? Please. That has nothing to do with time. There are not 18 skills because they didnt have time. Those are conscious design decisions. Having "more time" does not mean you can solve core gameplay issues. Its only with trial and error, and experimenting elsewhere, that game studios evolve.

Uh yeah, because dragons are the one and only important thing in an open-world action adventure stat-based RPG. Who cares about the world, or quests, or NPCs or anything when you've got DRAGONS, DUH!!!

This! THIS! THIS!

I care about few things in life: Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, Well-Developed game franchises, and wolves. Dragons do not interest me. The role playing experience :tes: brings does.

and dragons will not be that interesting imo, they are not even part of my character's story

Um. They're part of the world your character is playing in. Whether or not the fantasy in your head agrees with that, you're stuck with them.

umm...? they are a part of the world, not my story. my argonian has nothing to do with dragons, the same way he has nothing to do with ghosts. they are simply a feature of the world, my character will treat them as such, but he is not a dovakiin or dragon slayer
