Oblivion to Skyrim.

Post » Wed Oct 19, 2011 7:12 am

I am very excited about Skyrim, but I have never played Oblivion, and I have no intrest in buying it to play it. Will I still understand the complete story line in Skyrim without that background information?
And if anyone could can you give me a breif background of Oblivion.
Thank you.

It's not really necessary to know what happened in past TES games. But basically, various things happened in the past 4 TES games that now have enabled the return of Alduin the World Eater and dragons.

TES Arena: Destruction of Staff of Chaos
TES II Daggerfall: Destruction of the Numidium
TES III Morrowind: The events at Red Mountain
TES IV Oblivion: Oblivion Invasion and destruction of the Amulet of Kings
Now: King of Skyrim is assassinated, Nords engage in Civil war.

actually, before you play Skyrim, it'll be a good idea to play Oblivion, just because you have about 23 days to wait for skyrim, unless your playing another game, i would buy Oblivion for 20 bucks and go crazy, if you dont, your gonna miss out

Yeah, but its still nice to have gotten to know Oblivion before hand. Youll get to see what was and will forever be changed!
Oblivion:"Hail citizen! How goes it? Did you hear about the Emperors death?! Tragic..."
Skyrim:"HAIL, Dragonborn!!! I see your scars be deeper than mine! I respect you! See that there be a Dragon! Lets make ourselves worthy heroes at the feast in Valhalla!!! HUZZAH!"

Really, are you serious. It's not cod where the story and background mean nothing. Go to uesp.net and learn atleast something. If not alot, of the story will fly over your head. I'm not saying plaing prior games is a must, but your going to have to have some knowlege to understand anything at all.

To expand:

Spoiler
Arena: Jagar Tharn uses the Staff of Chaos to usurp the throne of the Empire. Barenziah's Champion eventually destroys the staff, banishes Jagar, and returns Uriel Septim to the throne.
Daggerfall: The Emperor sends you to investigate the death of King Lysandus. The Warp in the West, a period of brief civil war in the Iliac Bay region, occurs. Numidium is activated, and later destroyed.
Morrowind: Vvardenfell is quarantined due to rampant Blight infection as Dagoth Ur begins his bid for freedom. Indoril Nerevar's reincarnation returns to Vvardenfell. Dagoth Ur is defeated, and Lorkhan's heart is destroyed, along with the Tribunal's powers.
Oblivion: The death of Emperor Uriel Septim prompts an invasion of the realm by Mehrunes Dagon, aided and abetted by Mankar Camoran and the Mythic Dawn cult. The last son of the Septim line, Martin, destroys the Amulet of Kings to banish Dagon from Tamriel.

And now, 200 years later, Skyrim is in a state of civil war. these events, as foretold by The Elder Scrolls (which contain infallible prophecies), will lead to the return of the Dragons to Tamriel at the behest of Alduin the World Eater.

But you do not need to play any prior Elder Scrolls game to understand the plot of any of them. Each game is designed to exist on its own.

You got lost on the Pale Pass quest?

You got yourself arrested again - for the same crap as last time whateever that was?

You got bored of constantly trekking through Oblivion gates and decided to go north looking for something to do?

Dude, your forgetting that each game contains an entire library of books. New comers can learn all they need to by reading historical literary recollections that can be found throughout the game. No need for any out of game "crash course". I'll bet that the vast majority of the important historical background for Skyrim can be found throughout the land in books, scrolls, and various tomes.

OP I was in your position last month, I even started the same thread. I'll say what I learned from it, you can watch all the videos and read all the articles you want but nothing can give you that feeling you get when you play the game. It has nothing to do with Skyrim story wise but playing oblivion is something that can be missed. Also now on the forums when I see things that are talked about I know what people mean. So yes I know you said you had no interest in playing oblivion but I have a feeling it will help you out a little when playing Skyrim to understand things. Nothing big but it's nice to get what people are talking about. I'm hooked, oblivion has taken over.
