quick travel

Post » Wed Oct 19, 2011 9:52 pm

i just thought about all the stuff i am going to do in the game and i am soooo anxious. this made me think about travelling. i thought to myself if i would rather walk and take in all the skyrim has in the wilderness or will i quick travel just to save time. i decided that walking on foot, running, or riding my steed would be my fulfilling to me personally because this game has sooooo much stuff to see outside of the main and side quests. sure it will be time consuming but i feel like it will make it more life -like and in the long run will be all worth it. how do you guys feel about this? will you quick travel or roam the wilderness on foot or horse to get to you next quest?

To start with I will not fast travel, cause nothing is discovered! However...

Spoiler
I have heard you can take a carriage anywhere your heart desires, well to any major city, and discover it that way.

But I won't be doing that. I'd rather explore to start with and get a feel for things.

I'm determined not to use any fast travel on my first character, but I suspect I'll end up using it a few characters down the line after I've discovered much.

I dont use it when its my first time goin to a new location, I will walk and find all the goodies on the way there. but once I have walked that road a few times I fast travel... I dont see how it affects some peoples gaming....

"it doesnt feel as imersive when I fast travel!" Well just think up of something that happened on the way to your location, And the time still passes so its not like a insta teleport.

I personally won't be using the fast travel unless I'm short on time (ie - I need to go someplace irl). Other than that, foot travel is the best way to find new stuff!
Of course, I will probably try out the carriage fast-travel after a while.

In Oblivion, after a while, I started to walk or horse ride everywhere pretty much all the time, unless my inventory was getting full and I had to drop off the stuff at my house or sell some of it off. Or if I had limited time that particular day and I wanted to get something specific done before I had to quit. In Morrowind I did use the Silt Striders, boats, intervention, mark/recall spells a lot. Though you did generally walk everywhere in that game anyway. In Skyrim I will likely shy away from fast travel for the most part, unless it's a real world travel type deal. And it's not because of breaking immersion or anything like that because that kind of thing doesn't really matter all that much to me. But you generally find a lot of stuff to collect, or stuff to sell off, when you spend all that time walking from place to place. Plus it's always fun checking out the world and all it has to offer and using all those combat skills when you run across enemies or the wildlife.

No fast travel for my first playthrough. I can't wait to go horse back riding in the tundra with some sweet armor though.

Eventually I'll quick travel. At the beginning I'll be savoring the game play and views.

I figure a couple weeks into the game I'll start quick travelling for missions because I have a job/kids/a wife/responsibilities.

But I'll hold off on it as long as I can.

Sounds like a bad idea to miss all that exploring potential, but once you have crossed the tundra between Whiterun and Riverwood for the twentieth time, I don't think anyone will blame you if you FT.

If I find enough time, I want to make a mod like this:

Disable point and click fast travel option.

Initially remove the option to use carriage between most holds, and only keep a few routes active, depending on the political situations between different holds.

Add options for the players to negotiate between holds and initiate new traveling routes, but for it to happen he would have to travel to the capital of each hold and use diplomatic (or other) means, to initiate such services between the two holds.

As a continuum of the original quest lines to initiate travel services between the different holds, We can have travel services that would have carriages with trailer containers, useful for moving items between different homes and strong holds, and so on...

Other misc branches and continuations for the traveling quest lines, might become possible, when the time is ripe for them.

if i could strike bets with god or the devil

I would wager 10K that you will fast travel within the first 10 hours of playing skyrim

I prefer exploring the outdoors too... sometimes however u just feel like fast-traveling... and since its so convenient u do

i know that on oblivion i would fast travel on alot of the dumb quests where it was like... run to the other side of the map, talk to this person then run all the way back for 50 gold. erm no thanks.

hopefully there will not be any of these kinds of silly quests on skyrim, and also because its all new and i will want to descover diffrent places i would rather walk around.

Of course I'll be going on foot for my early playing and when exploring new regions. Going by my experiences on Oblivion though, sometimes I will make journeys (even familiar ones) on foot and other times I will prefer to fast travel for convenience. Sometimes I save in the middle of a journey or quest, but other times I want to jut get the thing finished and tie up loose ends (selling loot, last visit to the NPC or finishing up back at my home for example) before I come off for the night, sometimes I don't feel like journeying back and forth when I'm already near or at carrying capacity and sometimes going back and forth long journeys between a few locations can get a bit tiresome. Also with Oblivion I really hated the running along the sides of mountains thing when you were trying to get to some remote location. In those cases even if you knew where it was, you could not always get there by the most direct route and would often have to go well out of your way to find an accessible way of getting there. In those situations I would have gladly just fast travelled if I had the option.

Exploring is a quest in itself. The amount of times I've started a quest, just to forget about it totally because of side quests that occur is immense. I'll fast travel if I'm tired IRL or if my aim is just to complete a mission. Skyrim will probably be different for me though, half the game is in the travelling. I want to get nervous and have to prepare for travelling - immersion benefits from that.

I can just imagine looking through my inventory to make sure I'm only taking what I really need. Getting thick clothes, sacking my armour and deciding which weapons I will use and which technique and route I want to take. Sharpening my tools, stocking up on food.
