Why Morrowind still best of the series!

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:06 am

Let me think on this for a moment.

I loved Morrowind and it was a huge improvement over Arena/Daggerfall back in the day, which showed their blah random-generated-ness in spades. In total, I probably spent close to a year of my life in real time playing that game between all the modding and playthroughs I did between its release and Oblivion's release, so I have plenty of experience to draw from.

Oblivion was a major disappointment for me, which I understand is an opinion that many fans of the series have shared. No need to go on about that.

I was eagerly anticipating Skyrim but was also to be disappointed if it followed too closely along the lines of Oblivion. I'm ecstatic to be able to say that I love it, and I'd take it over Morrowind. While I have a lot of nostalgia for Morrowind, the game is oldschool but also just old at this point. The improvements made to systems as basic-seeming as NPC schedules would push Skyrim ahead in comparison and make it feel much more organic and immersive (the more closer-to-nature graphics don't hurt, either), yet I don't feel that Skyrim is lacking much of anything over Morrowind in terms of scope, complexity, or attention to detail.

I'm afraid I can't share your opinion on this one.

I've yet to play Skyrim, but everything I have heard of it is positive. I can't say if it's a worthy successor to Morrowind, but from what I've heard, it very well might.

Oh and I can legit say that anyone that does think Oblivion is better is NOT someone I'd agree with at all.

That game, though I may love it, is a failure in so many aspects.

"Which is better" needs to be replaced with "Which I prefer" , then everything would make a lot more sense..

Somebody cast a flameward.

Indeed.

As I've pointed out elsewhere, most of what's arguable among Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim is a matter of personal taste. I personally think gamesas got it just about right (for me!) in Morrowind. They changed a good deal and got plenty wrong in Oblivion, which modders to an extend have remedied. Skyrim retreated from some of the Oblivion decisions, but made others I strongly disagree with: a lack of character stats at game start, keeping the always hit FPS mentality, removing spellmaking, no paper doll, creating a terrible personal character interface, etc. But this is only true for me. It may be true for someone else, and it may not. My reality is no better or worse in this, since we aren't discussing verifiable facts, but opinions.

So rather than get on soapboxes and proclaim our special ES truths, and call one another names, perhaps we could just get on with the business of enjoying what we have, and playing the things.

I can. Not because it is the better game, but simply because I prefer it. And I′m not going to elaborate as I already have sooo many times.

That said, both games are masterpieces :foodndrink:

The big bonus for skyrim is the art direction , the nice add ons like crafting, riverflows , shadows , the look in general , the quests , the musics and the speech ...

but it has really big flaws gameplay wise , too much simplification too much cutting of the good things , to much merging of stuff , very pooor detailing compared to lder games , the world looks good but a bit repetitive due tothe lack of variances in some aspects , in general seems they wanted to cut out some of the stuff couse simply couln't fit in the game for the 11 11 11 timeframe ... but also the game was enourmosly simplified to try to attract more people to buy it and not feel it like a niche game for rpgamers but for anyone to buy try and then put aside ....

Why is nobody making arguments that Battlespire or Redguard are better than Morrowind?

Pretty much every argument for Skyrim being better comes down to Skyrim (a game released in 2011) beats the graphics and combat system of Morrowind (a game released in 2002). Quite simply considering the time gap I expect a lot better than Skyrim. In 45 hours of game play I'm the head of all the guilds, have beat the civil war, a lot of the miscellaneous quest, half the deadric quests, and have beat the main quest. The guilds have no depth. You can become the leader of a guild with minimal effort. For example, to become the head of the College of Winterhold, you can be completely incompetent at magic and just hack and slash your way through 5 quests and there your the leader of the guild. Then as a guild leader there is an endless supply of monotonous generated quests. The guilds are way shorter than Oblivion or Morrowind with less reward. Yeah the visuals and atmosphere are engrossing but that should be expected. If anything Skyrim is less impressive graphically than Morrowind when they are compared with their contemporary competitors.

That tends to happen when you rush through a game non-stop. I'm certain Morrowind could be done in a similar time if I had the time.

Yeah you're right, but I seem to remember it took me a lot longer to finish all possible guild quests/MQ/ plus some side quests for Morrowind (This is without the expansions, as it won't be fair to Skyrim). And at the time I had all the time in the world. And even if it is as you say, what I'm seeing on the forums is people saying many of the guild quests lack any depth or guild interaction (such as in Morrowind) which puts me off a bit. I'm really looking forward to the weekend so I can see for myself. Damn job eating up all of my time...

This is because they wanted to streamline ...
you are what you play
they say ...
there is tons of content
they say ,
the game is more accessible
they say , but in the end what results? its just boring ad no real effort is needed , you just go over and over similar quests , ( that are nice and cured in dialogues etc ) that because of casual gamers that do not want to have too much imersion or efforts in playing , this game may soon slide toward a push the button win the match kind of game , removing and removing features that made great and notable the series they are just "streamlining" it to other random crap games around like Dragonage 2 fail and witcher stuff hack and slash kind of games...

2 Worlds 2 did a way better job for magic that simply made the game really surprising , in combat , in magic , in coop adventure ... pity that it was quite boring in the quests and repetitive ....

Well - Morrowind is better because :
- It does offer true RPG gameplay.
- It require real RPG understanding about items and their stat relations.
- It does requires real involving into the different situation which u will be falling in.
- It does have the full palette from winter to summer.
- It does not have action game look and feel.
- It does not offer a limited list of topic interaction with the npcs.
- It does not limit enchanting possibilities of the items.
- It does offer real creepy athmosphere of gothic-dark age-knightish times.
- It does not focus only on one prime story line target.
- It does offer true open ended story line.
- It does offer true epic experience.
- It does require advanced thinking before acting ( true RPG approach )/
- It does have true RPG-adventure alike dream world, filled up with maximum different colors and cultures, buildings and inventions never seen before.
- It does makes the player feel less earth, and more dream character.

Morrowind is the best game ever. since then i see only developing toward be more "popular culture" type games.
I am not purple pony games, joystic with 2 buttons child-frendly games fan.
Flame me, but this is my truth. - There is nothing else like Morrowind.
