Throwing away weapon/helmet

Post » Mon Sep 14, 2009 3:51 pm

Just an idea I had:

When fighting and seeing you won't hold off for much longer (health getting low, more enemies appearing, etc), you could throw away your weapon and receive a temporary minor speed boost and the weight of the weapon is subtracted from your total weight, allowing you to run away a tad faster. If you, however, think that you might hold off, you could swiftly remove your helmet, giving you a temporary attack damage, speed and accuracy bonus, but making you more vulnerable to attacks.

You could later pick up the items you threw away, unless, of course, someone else has picked them up.

I haven't played Armored Core. Was there a similar mechanic in the game?

Yeah where you drop excess weapons, attachments to get more speed, but that is a whole nother game.

I see. I still think it would add a fun touch on the battles. Perhaps some modder would make something like that when the game gets released.

You could do this in Morrowind and Oblivion (cant say for sure if you could in Daggerfall). It isn't one button thing though.
Less stuff you carry the faster you are. The boost in Morrowind for losing 100 from your 600 was pretty noticeable, but you were faster than most enemies you'd want to run away from anyway without dropping the excess weight. I don't remember how noticeable it is in Oblivion, I haven't played it in a while.

I doubt they'll add one button key for this if you can do it manually by pausing the game by going to inventory and dropping stuff you want. I think they rather use their time to implement other stuff in the game.

Right, I know we could drop items in those games, but I would like to see an actual animation/player boosts that come with those things. It's indeed a small change, but I'm all for it.

When I saw the title, I thought this was about throwing weapons (like the throwing knives in MW), and that you wanted to add the possibiliy to throw your armor/helmet to your opponent as a weapon :P.

Now that I think of it, it would be awesome to use all the clutter and throw it at NPC's and that it actually hurts them...

Yea...hmm. I mean, you CAN throw away your helmet, in game. In real life it would make seeing where you're running, and breathing easier. Shield and sword are also a big one. Almost all people retreating from battle would throw away armor and weapons, to speed the retreat and maybe hoping to blend in. That's why the Spartans would say "come back with your shield, or on it."

The trouble is translating that to in game stats. First of all, you have to make (losing your weapons) > (dying). Which is hard to do with being able to save anytime. Also, player characters are usually loaded down with loot, potions, etc, NPCs are naked except for clothes and armor. So you'd have to do away with that to make it work, which I like because, really, how much stuff do you have on you any given day? Can you carry 20 bottles of beer without breaking them? It's not a matter of weight, but volume and distribution.

So...there are a lot of obstacles, but maybe you could have helmets/shields have a more adverse effect on movement than what would be expected just because of their weight. Generally I don't like solutions such as this, for example causing Heavy Armor to reduce magicka, because it's an uncreative solution without a rational explanation. However, like I said, it's not so much about weight as volume and distribution, for instance the wind resistance created by a large shield. It would be easier to run with a small sphere the same weight as the shield than the shield itself. So maybe.
