Hard to get back into F3

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:36 pm

I'm trying to play some Fallout 3 until Skyrim comes out; just beat New Vegas for the 2nd time. And therein lies my problem: New Vegas. To me, New Vegas took everything great about F3, and expanded on it greatly. Best of all were the characters, quests, and overall writing. It's making it really hard for me to get back into F3, which I once loved so much.

Anyone else had this issue?

I enjoy vanilla NV over vanilla F3, but modded F3 over modded NV. I don't play vanilla though. I can't get bored of a game with endless user created content.

My F3 game is "lightly" modded with FWE and Fellout. I'm tempted to try that new Alton, IL mod, but am afraid I won't get anywhere with it before this week is up. Modded F3 is awesome, but I haven't seen any mods that make the world more cohesive.

This.

Mods can almost extend the interest in the game indefinitely.

Even more fun if you learn how to make your own mods.

Well, Baa fell off a cliff over in Oblivion the other day and woke up with a headache as Ody in FO3 on the 5th of November. She tried to clear her head of the confusion and finally was able to gather up her 3 companions at the Megaton house and go wandering. Ody’s been on vacation from the wasteland since mid July with only a occasional visits since for a few hours. But, on her return, she knew exactly what she needed to do, kill the Enclave, so she went to their camps and they were still there and she took them on. (smile) Once she’d figured out all the buttons again, she went downtown to take on the Muties. After exhausting most of DC’s wildlife, she returned to Megaton to sort out the loot. Somewhat to her surprise, the cabinet was overflowing with unsold stuff gathered since July.

Ody selected five of her companions to help carry most of the loot on her round to the merchants and caravaners. That got rid of a lot of it, but she had kept the special stuff for the guy a Ft Independence. Went there and got lots of 5.56mm for about 15 Enclave armors.

Oblivion is fun roleplay, Fallout is just fun, especially with Mod companions along. They come out with some of the craziest, funniest dialogue at the point of the most intense combat:

“I thought I heard something, I got your back, Holy xxxx, What the xxxx, I'm on your side, This is hopeless, Let’s get out of here,” etc.

Just think about what F3 does better than FNV... more random encounters, more wasteland feel, more/bigger dungeons. Its true though FNV did improve on F3 in many ways... but the capital wasteland looks a lot better imo.

I always enjoyed F3 far more than FNV.

I spent so much time in F3 that it did lose gloss, but the atmosphere is still there when I go for a stroll in it.

I can't quite get back to Fo3 because I simply played it so much. Can't really play the originals either.

That time comes with every game.

I just uninstalled Fallout 3 from my Pc. Along with Mods and all. With Skyrim coming out I decided Fallout 3 can be put to rest.

I've felt exactly the same way, I know how you feel. As much as I love the destroyed Washington thing, I find that New Vegas has so much more content, especially without mods. Even though mods can create new enemies, weapons etc, but the main story always stays the same, and that is the main issue. I've also just beat New Vegas for the second time, but I have great ideas for the remaining two faction endings (in my case, Legion and House). I want to do them, but Skyrim has delayed those plans even though I'm not a swords and sorcery fan, or even an Elder Scrolls one, for that matter. Give me an assault rifle over an elven war axe any day.

But yes, New Vegas did expand on Fallout 3 in every way, except one - atmosphere. The destroyed Capital Wasteland is infinitely more interesting than the barren Mojave desert. But even so, I have two more playthroughs of New Vegas, as well as one more of Fallout 3 left (I want to get the fabled platinum trophy, only 20% left to go!). If it weren't for you, Skyrim, I'd being doing one of these two things by now! Grrrr.

You're not the only one to have done this, I know. So this isn't aimed directly at you, but against anyone who does this in general.

I find that to express one's opinion and follow it up with "/thread" is quite annoying. Are you seriously saying that you're opinion is so correct that no further discussion of this subject is of any worth? No, of course not. Even meant light heartedly, its quite arrogant.

Mild rant there, I know, but it had to be said. :)

yes, mods... FO3 is so much easy to improve, when New vegas is so limited. I think this is the main reason explaining the lack of creativity in New Vegas mods. Half of hem are just conversion of FO3 mods and any new place is difficult to add in such an exiguous world without creating a whole worldspace. The scripting is almost the same and there are very few things in new Vegas we could'nt add in FO3. The only thing is, as you say, Skyrim is just released... Doesn't mean Oblivion or Morrowind (or Daggerfall) are not still great games.

I returned to modding for FO3 ater the relative disappoinment of modding for FONV. The best thing I can tell about modding for NV is it gave me ideas for more FO3 mods.
In fact, some people ported Fallout 3 things to New vegas when I did exactly the contrary. With a casino, weapon mods, new kinds of mutants and creatures and more useless crafting recipes FO3 is really tasty.
In New Vegas there is not even the equivalent of the talon company to spice up the game. Ruined DC was more interesting, not speaking of the pitt and Point Lookout. IMO the only thing that saves New Vegas is the Old world blues add-on.
