Okay, so I'm unsure as to what the exact age of the average forum member is on here, but for the older ones amongst us, I couldn't help but noticing how day-by-day, the fictional events of the Fallout 3 universe may not be completely inconceivable in terms of a nuclear confrontation.

Obviously the FO3 creators are astute individuals who realize the current global political relationships may lead to a US-Sino war of some kind.

Just today, US President Obama was in Canberra, Australia talking about how how our country is important to its interests in the Asia-Pacific region and how it supports a growing Chinese super-power, as long as it plays by the rules.

Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, announced an extra 2500 US soliders will be stationed in Australia over the next five years.

The build-up will start with 250 soldiers next year but will gradually work up to 2500 marines in five years time.

The United States Air Force will also be given more access to Australian bombing ranges and training facilities in remote areas of the Northern Territory.

The new military agreement has not been welcomed by China.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Weimin said it may not be appropriate for the US and Australia to contribute to a military build up in the region.

He said China seeks peaceful development at a time when the world economy is sluggish.

He said he hopes America will keep its word that it is comfortable with a strong China.

**** Sorry for the heavy nature of the topic but it really got me thinking****

Wars don't pop up any more because of some petty treaties. China is an oppressive semi-Commie? dictatorship but they are not stupid. Both China and USA rely heavily on foreign trade and full scale war would ruin both countries' economies pretty good, not to mention likely reluctance of Australia and pretty much any NATO/etc. nation to jump in such a horrible conflict.

USA is already fighting one war in Afghanistan and possibly in Iran in a few months/years. I'm sure they could pull it off but a two-front war would be devastating for the United States, as the ever resilient Public Opinion? is the Achilles' heel of Western civilization. No matter winning or losing, the people will demand peace sooner or later. In modern times, very damn soon.

This is just two big players measuring their dikes to show the world they are the big boys not to mess with. Happens all the time in the world. Man survived decades of day-to-day ego-fueled cockfight between NATO and Warsaw Pact, I'm sure we can get through the 21st century without blowing ourselves up.

That said the Resource Wars in Fallout were mainly because of humanity's slow reaction to running out of natural resources. USA tried to stay out of the war as long as possible, but was attacked without provocation by China. As far as Fallout history tells us, USA most certainly did not want to get involved in the conflict.

Good post Pistolero.

Agree that at this juncture and hopefully in the future, it's just ego fueled posturing,

However it is a concern when a foreign superpower decides to ramp up its military presence on your own sovereign soil.

The US though are committed to this and other regions for a reason. To protect their national interests. It's that they're prepared to go to war so readily which frightens me. Although I agree, taking on China is a whole different issue to invading Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

To paraphrase the DOD SM-3-11-A Nov 1966 “Personal and Family Survival”:

‘Following an attack that totaled in excess of 5,000 megatons in destructive power, and that 65 percent were exploded on or near the ground, generating fallout …. Then, studies show that a nationwide fallout shelter system has a greater lifesaving potential for the investment involved than any other element of strategic defense, and that it is, in fact, essential to the damage-limiting effectiveness of other strategic defense elements, i.e. an antiballistic missile, anti-satellite defense, and improved antiaircraft forces.’

So you see that’s why those dudes at Vault Tech dug all those holes in the ground around the DC wasteland - they read the book.

Political discussion will be blocked soon. Why it hasn't already

America can't stand any country being better than it so it moves its military around the world like a pawn on a chess board as a way of showing its power and attempt to opress any rival countries. Maybe its because China isn't a "democracy" and its growing day by day compared to nearly every other country which is suffering for economic loses.
The need for troops in a foreign country with no intend of a planned invasion or attack is stupid, and they now have access to bombing ranges, where is the point in going to Australia to practice bombing when there is vast empty lands across America ?
They must think the rest of the world are complete fools.

America are also sending 50 something FBI agents to London for the olympics for "security", BS! If they came here they should also be watched if they want to perform undercover.
I don't trust America much...World Police
