BAIN (Wrye Flash Mod Installer) – First impressions & qu

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 9:11 am

A couple of useful features you may not have found yet:

Double-clicking on the empty space beside the current directory path (below the tabs) brings up a favorites-type menu for quick directory switching. This can be organised with sub-menus if it gets cluttered. Hovering over a directory in the current path gives a breadcrumb-style navigation menu.

Files can be dragged (shift-drag to move) on to a tab - good for quick sorting of eg. downloaded files. Folders I use a lot are on permanent locked tabs eg. data folder for a particular game, mod archive folders, BAIN folders etc. This way I have ready access to them without actually navigating there or having them active.

Thanks, wetblanket, valuable information indeed.

Update: BAIN, FOMM & the (infamous) hud_main_menu.xml

We have talked about the "hud_main_menu.xml" before; at the moment, I have 3 mods installed that add four changes to this file. Here they are, added manually:

<!-- BEGIN Added by Advanced Recon Thermal Nightvision --> <!-- END Added by Advanced Recon Thermal Nightvision -->	<!-- BEGIN Added by Powered Power Armor --> <!-- END Added by Powered Power Armor -->	<!-- BEGIN Added by Arwen's Realism Tweaks --> <!-- END Added by Arwen's Realism Tweaks -->

At first, I simply left the XMLs that added the changes for every single mod within the BAIN-folders, since I changed the XML in the end after all installations were done in FOMM with the Unified Hud Project (UHP) anyway. And yes, I didn't forget to add DarnUI prior to UHP but after the XML-switchers.

However, that procedure proved to be a fickle state of affairs. Depending on the installation-order, the UHP did not produce a stable result - I crashed more than once during the start screens. But when I overwrote the "hud_main_menu.xml" manually with one that already included the changes made by DarnUI, and added the necessary changes for the mods by hands, I had a stable result every time.

So, I deleted all "hud_main_menu.xml" from the packages and relied on a late installation of DarnUI and UHP via FOMM. That worked better but the result was still not always stable.

So, now I have added a BAIN Installer that includes a Vanilla-"hud_main_menu.xml", one with DarnUI changes and one for the mods that I am most likely adding to any LO. I install this package last and haven't had a problem in three repeats.
