Someone please tell me why I am getting a CTD.

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 11:02 am

Okay, so when I start the Fallout launcher, or when I launch the game using Fallout Fake_Fullscreen.exe I get a CTD or the launcher crashes. I'm running the Steam version of New Vegas with all DLC. I am using a lot of mods but I've checked and double checked for compatibility among my mods, latest releases and load order issues or at least I'm pretty sure I have. Ran Boss but there are a number of mods I'm using these days that Boss doesn't detect but I think for the most part load order shouldn't matter to much. When I launch FNVEdit to create a merged patch it doesn't come up with any major errors. So what's the problem here? Theoretically my mom list should be stable, it should all be compatible and up to date. What mod is causing the problem? This is driving me nuts.

The launcher crashed on me all the time when i used it, now i just have a shortcut to the NVSE executable.

Usually a crash before main menu is caused by a missing master file, however BOSS and FNVedit would warn about missing masters so that is not the issue.

I've also gotten crashes before main menu due to faulty main and hud menu xml files. Try to temporarily move Data\Menus folder somewhere else and see if you get any further.

Tried moving the Data\Menus folder somewhere else and no effect. Double checked Boss to see if it was complaining about anything, but it wasn't. I'm beside myself here. Nothing in my load order should be causing this problem. What's the esm/esp limit? I'm running 168 plugins but I thought it was well over 200? like 244 or something?

*edit* Uninstalled my hud mods via FOMM, deleted my Fallout folder and re-created the fallout ini and reinstalled Darnified UI, Prmary Needs Hud, Adjustable Hud, Immersive hud, The weapon mod menu, mod configuration menu and unified hud. Launcher no longer crashes but the game still crashes. It crashes when I get to the Bethesda Softworks logo screen, not at the first screen.

You likely have too many mods. There's no concrete number; it varies at least based on what the mods are, if not also by computer. Something like 254 would be the theorhetical maximum, but I doubt anyone has New Vegas functioning with over 200.

Yeah, normally I would agree with you but my Oblivion install has something like 252 esps/esms and is running fine and that game is older than New Vegas and I don't even have anywhere close to 200 in my New Vegas install. I suppose I could try unchecking them all and testing to see which one is the problem, but that will take forever lol.

Just a suggestion, mods that change the menu .xml files can cause a crash if they are uninstalled and the correct xml. files are not put back. I've done this a couple of times myself the game tries to load then quits to desktop.

Also unchecking mods and seeing if the game loads is a giant pain but if you do it in very large groups you would soon narrow it down.

Yeah, I tend do it in groups of 7-10 and as I said, I completely moved the menu folder, deleted the mygames/falloutnv folder and re-created the .ini file and still crashed, so its obviously not a menu issue.

Here's a thread where some folks dealt with finding the maximum number of mods they could get to work with New Vegas:
http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/278666-max-number-of-mods/

Spoiler alert: most people max out at around 140.

Just a quick note - while this is entirely true, the ~140 mod limit does not usually cause CTDs on launch, typically symptoms are resources not loading correctly in-game which does sometimes lead to a crash, but this will only happen after the game has started.

Problems with CTDs on launch are almost always either missing masters or broken UI XMLery so you're probably on the right track, sorry I can't offer anything more helpful.
