I want the past TES titles but I want updated graphics too!

Post » Sun Nov 27, 2011 4:06 pm

Hi everyone,

This is my first time...or second in a VERY long time posting in these forums so please have mercy on me. LOL.

The title says it all!

Is there a way with my Win 7 ultimate machine with 8GB of RAM & Nvidia 260 GTX card to play these older games AND
do so with "updated" graphics?

Thanks everyone for looking at this and for your answers!

Peace out.......

Pretty much just mods. Bethesda will probably never rework their older titles.

With the success of TES maybe releasing HD versions? but I still doubt that. Just google guides on how to get these older games running through DOS-box. They should run fine on your engine, and again, just search for some mods that improve the visuals like python suggested.

Why does almost everyone who's new to the series insist that they would need "updated graphics" to play the older games?

It's kinda silly; the first two games are available as free downloads... Why would Beth waste the time (when they lost the original source code, to boot) to do a re-make of them? Yes, that's what would be necessary to "add updated graphics." It's more than just flipping a switch, folks.

DaggerXL will eventually work, but for now, learn to love mode 13h. There's a certain degree of beauty in 320x200x8bpp that has never yet been quite matched.

When I was younger I loved Morrowind and once Oblivion came out I didn't like playing Morrowind for the graphics. Now that I'm older and have played most of the newer gen games I've been able to recognize the beauty and creativity put into these older games. I think for a lot of people it just takes getting used to or an understanding of the older games to appreciate them. I personally think the art style of Daggerfall is unique because it's not trying to be the most beautiful game. I think it helps that its not 3d as well.

Like Nottheking said, just try enjoying it for what it is. Don't try making yourself like it just because your a fan of the newer games. If you can't get into it go wait a while and try again some other time. Otherwise its just not for you.

I have plans for a Daggerfall mod using the Skyrim engine. However even if someone eventually makes such a mod there is no comercial engine out there that can replace the feeling of playing original Daggerfall. The game would improve greatly if it could be played at an higher screen resolution and that's where DaggerXL comes in. I find that 3D graphics can never replace good 2D handdrawn graphics, which are used for Daggerfall flats.

The light is also unique in Daggerfall. Notice how Daggerfall lights at night flicker and the effect on the nearby houses, with that awesome ambient music playing instead of the new orchestral bull* in modern games which looks like you are being followed by an orchestra all the time.

Hehe, I've had the same sort of thoughts, though doing anything that comes even close to replicating Daggerfall properly is probably too big and ambitious a project for anything aside from a major game studio, unless you managed to pull together a lot of dedicated and organised people. Though that might actually be possible these days... not likely, but possible.

Hello sir,

I would just like to state that I don't think that just because older graphics are what I see dictate how awesome or not a game WAS.

Please don't bracket me as a "visual appeal" person when it comes to game titles!

I have Win 7 Ultimate, not to brag, and a number of older games won't work on my comp, ESPECIALLY Red Baron 3d which I LOVE.

Just wanted you to know.
Thank you!

My plans are not very ambitious. In fact, and because my free time is limited i was planning to release a couple of small mods for Skyrim first, inspired by Daggerfall.

Converting Daggerfall musics to use in Skyrim.

Add some notorious guilds that never made to the game like the prosttutes guild and the temple of Dibella (i guess this would have to be a mature mod with a 18+ years warning).

The merchant repeatable quests were awesome and i'm planning to add them to Skyrim.

Eventually when i become confortable with the tescs i may adventure myself with reproducing Privateers Hold and build one or two major cities, like Daggerfall, Sentinel or Wayrest.

Somehing i'm not planning to do is to put everything in the same world map. I would rather forget the idea of making a continuous landscape and put each major city in it's own world map. What would be the point anyway? Skyrim engine can't handle the huge land area of Daggerfall and this way i can build realistic sized cities that match the original size and add areas of wilderness around cities for those who like to explore outside towns. Anyway this is the idea.

Ah. I was thinking something larger than Skyrim, though still far smaller than Daggerfall's land area - most of that was just extra space, anyway. Still very much scaled, though. The fact that Skyrim has Hammerfell clothing and some architecture that wouldnt' be completely out of place in High Rock would probably help at least a bit... I still do tend to think too big at times, though. <_<

You want new graphics - play newer games. It's easy.
Well, you can also use DosBox filters, 2xSai filter in particular. Won't do any miracles, but picture will be less pixelated.

The city of Daggerfall alone would be like half of Skyrim as it is currently! :) Seriously, though. That actually sounds like a doable project. I'd LOVE to see cities that size make a comeback.

Not to mention 110,000 NPCs. Again, though, still doable, certainly... Not easily, but doable.
