Redguard won't install in Windows 7 x64

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 1:13 pm

Hi

I have the window 7 64bit version and I am desperately trying to install Redguard. I have all the other program files and checked tons of guides on how to do this. In all the guides they claim their install process works without any problems. It has worked previously with the microsoft "Virtual Machine" when windows 7 was in beta and it was free.

When I start Redinstall.exe it gives the regular window. I choose Install Redguard and the window disappears (and I assume its supposed to launch setup.exe) . I wait but nothing happens.

I tried different compatability modes which windows suggested. (winxp sp2, windows 95)

Please, can anyone help ?

The Redguard installer is a piece of 16-bit software, and 64-bit Windows can only run 32-bit and 64-bit software.

If you have access to an older computer with Windows XP or something, you could install the game there and just copy the installed game files on a USB stick or something and then set up DOSBox to run Redguard and you could be able to play it on your 64-bit Windows computer.

Thank you :) Windows Task Manager reported it as 32-bit so I couldn't wrap my head around it. I'll do some google searches for some help about 16 bit executables in win7

Ok then, I got it installed and copied to my machine. When I start the game it says "Redguard is not installed on this system. Please use the Redguard Install CD to install the game."

Anyone got ideas of what to do ?

nvm. rgfx.exe won't start either, I give up

rgfx.exe won't run in 64-bit Windows cause it's a 16-bit DOS program. So you need to use DOSBox to get it to run in 64-bit Windows, although there are parts of the game that still don't work correctly in DOSBox, but hopefully future versions of DOSBox will fix that.

This game is a tech mess, and Todd Howard actually said in an interview once that it's his largest regret in his career at gamesas that they never made a proper Windows/DirectX patch for Redguard.

I am trying the other approach

Got the software edition working with virtual machine 2007, using windows 98 SE. But it lags too much to be any fun. Looked like a great game!

Wanting it to work with 3dfx edition working I am still tweaking. Virtual machine wouldn't install directx so dgVoodoo1.40plus wouldn't work.

I am now trying VirtualBox-4.1.4-74291, but it wouldn't install windows 98, so I will try XP SP3

if that fails too I have one last option VMware-player-4.0.0-471780
